Generation No. 5
FEBRUARY 15, 2008
79. LONNIE DAVIS5 COOPER (HOWARD4, BLACKBURN EDWARD3, JULIA2 TONEY, JOHN F.1) was born September 09, 1904 in Winifrede, West Virginia, and died March 30, 1986 in Charleston, West Virginia. He married DELLA FIELDS, daughter of AMSTER FIELDS and EFFIE LANHAM. She was born January 14, 1908 in Romance, Jackson County, West Virginia, and died January 19, 1997 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Notes for LONNIE DAVIS COOPER:
My father was a soft-spoken man but he let you know that he was the boss.
He was a Coal-Miner and often, you would hear his children say 'I am proud to have that Coal Miner as my father'.
My husband 'Eddie' would say, 'If Lonnie Cooper can't do it, then it can't be done'.
Dad had the ability to fix/repair/build just about anything.
More About LONNIE DAVIS COOPER:
Burial: Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, Boone County, West Virginia
Notes for DELLA FIELDS:
When my Grandparents divorced, mom, her siblings and mother came to Boone County, WV and lived with my Great Grandmother Narissa Adaline (Jones) Lanham. Mom married my dad when she was only 16 and they met when she was berry-picking near to White Oak and Dad came riding up on a horse.
Mom had no formal education because survival and not schooling was more important. Mom and her siblings milked cows to help supply food as they were paid with flour, sugar, etc. Her lack of education was never a detriment as she could read her Bible and had qualities on how to love and make meals fit for a King. Her home-canned vegetables from dad's garden were un-equaled. Her kitchen was always open and we always wondered if we would have enough food 'but' it seemed the more who came to eat, the more bountiful the supply. Mom was blessed with so much love and not just for her family but for anyone in need of 'special love' and that always included Cecil, Willie and Aunt Reany. She made our house a home and was loved and respected in the community. She was an absolute Christian and she often attended our small church in Coopertown 'alone' and she would tell us that she would pray and sing before returning home.
GOD WAS 'ALWAYS' IMPORTANT TO MOM AND FOR HER FAMILY

Family #6.
James McCroskey(1)#6, son of John #1, b. ca 1712 North Ireland. Came to America with
his parents about 1735. Married to Elizabeth (last name –perhaps Hays). Died about 1781 or 1782.
After James' death, Elizabeth married Billingsby Gibson, from Ireland, who was in the Rev. War.
The following are believed to be the children of James and Elizabeth:
· James(2)#34, believed to have been born about 1766, and when grown lived in Washington Co.,
Va.; m.(1) Ann Duff (2) Rebecca Avent.
· John(2)#14, who is believed to have lived first in Washington Co., Va.; m. Margaret Duff;
moved to South Carolina, then Georgia.
· Francis(2)#986, who lived first in Washington Co., Va., and later in Mecklenburg Co., N.C.,
and still later in Morgan Co., AL.
There were probably other children in this family who have yet to be identified. One may
have been Rachel.

SOME EARLY ROBBINS GENERATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES:
July 5, 2005: "The information in this posting has been excerpted from the ROBBINS JOURNAL, Vol. I, No. 1, July 1989, pp. 1 - 5. The Journal was edited by Kevin K. Mittge, a Robbins family historian, archivist, librarian, and published genealogist. The Journal is now defunct."

"Introduction To The Robbins Family History, by Kevin K. Mittge.

"There have been many Robbins descendants over the years who have done research on the early history of the Robbins family in America. They haven't always agreed on each other's conclusions but they probably would agree that documentation is rather rare on our early Carolina ancestors. Putting together what information has been found to make any kind of conclusion is, therefore, difficult. The following article traces very generally what is known, or assumed to be known about the first four generations of the Robbins family, in particular, where the various lines out of Randolph Co., North Carolina, have emigrated. I shall leave it to others to prove or disprove any of this article.

I am grateful for information provided by Marvin Robbins, Ocala, FL; Mary Kate Horner, Lebanon, IN; and Margaret Davis, Yakima, WA; and many others who have worked and are still working on this topic. ... [Text omitted]

Marvin Robbins of Ocala, Florida, has been the latest to put together what he feels is the correct, general, outline of the early Robbins generations. He claims our progenitor was one Isaac Robbins (born about 1670 in England), who had at least three sons: William, Elisha, and Richard. Supposedly the early family were 'Separate Baptists', a dissenter group, and moved from England to Wales and then to America.

Examining old family traditions, Marvin believes Richard Robbins went straight to North Carolina, Elisha to Virginia (before moving south), and William perhaps to New York and/or Pennsylvania before moving on to North Carolina. The early settlers of Isaac Robbins' family began appearing in Rowan Co., North Carolina, records in 1754, when Richard Robbins witnessed the will of a Joseph Robins. In 1757, Richard and Elisha Robbins are recorded as witnessing a land transaction for Marmaduke Vickery and two years later appear as chain-bearers for a land survey for the same Vickery land. After this, Elisha disappears from the records, but Richard and William continue to appear in tax records. It is not known if Elisha had children; the children and grandchildren of William and Richard are discussed below.

At the same time as our ancestor's emigration, an unrelated Robins family also moved to North Carolina and, perhaps just to vex future historians, settled near our Robbins family. The existence of the two unrelated Robbins-Robins families has been long disputed. ... [Text omitted]

William Robbins (I)

William Robbins has been suggested as the father of Mathew, William (II), Jacob and Nathaniel Robbins. These family lines emigrated in a general pattern from North Carolina to Franklin and Montgomery counties, Virginia, to Shelby and Henry counties, Kentucky, and then into Indiana - only diverging on their final destinations in that state. Mathew Robbins was possibly married to Bethiah Nation and their family moved into Davidson Co., North Carolina. Their children have been listed as : Nancy (Ann), Isabel, Jonathan and Matthew. Ann was married to William Swaim and lived in Stokes Co., North Carolina; Isabel was married to William Wilson Livingston Jr. Not much is known of Jonathan or Matthew. ... [Text omitted]

Jacob Robbins (I) was born about 1738 and it is suggested he died about 1830 in Jennings Co., Indiana. He married to Mary, who was possibly of the Wells family. Jacob and Mary are believed to be the parents of William, Absalom, Jacob (II), James, Mary, Martha (called Massey), and Margaret. The emigration pattern of his children and grandchildren is very similar. ... [Text omitted]

Absalom Robbins, the second son of Jacob and Mary, was married to Mary Ogle shortly after arriving in Virginia. It has not been known for sure when he died, but just recently Robbins descendant Marlene Botkin has discovered evidence that Absalom may have died in 1860 (Breckinridge County, Kentucky) at the age of 95. Absalom's descendants are spread widely; some settled in Indiana, others returned to Kentucky from Indiana, some moved on to Missouri and Iowa, and still more settled in Oregon. ... [Text omitted]

Richard Robbins

Richard Robbins, the third suggested son of Isaac, was born about 1712. He arrived in North Carolina about 1751. It is not known whom he married but is said that the following are his children: Richard Jr., James, William, Isaac, John, and Michael. Of Richard Jr., William and Michael nothing is known. ... [Text omitted]

The eldest son, Jacob (born 1779)[son of James Robbins in preceding paragraph], was married to Elizabeth Rousch. The Rousch name was later changed by some descendants to 'Rush.' This family left North Carolina and, moving through the South, settled in Blount Co., Alabama by 1850. ... [Text omitted]

Isaac Robbins, another son of Richard, was born about 1740 in Wales. He was married to Ann Bryant about 1760 and they had eleven children: Diana, Isaac, John, Ezekial, Richard, Thomas, Daniel, Elizabeth, Ann, Amy, and Keziah. At this time I have no information on where these families moved to."
_______________
"It is intended that these excerpts from the ROBBINS JOURNAL and from the work of other careful Robbins family historians shall assist those just beginning or continuing to search for Robbins family information. I am not able to vouch for any of the data contained herein because I conducted none of the research and possess none of the documentation. I have documented my Robbins lineage which descends from Absolam's son, Micajah Robbins. Absolam was a son of Jacob Robbins and, according to the essay contained in this message, it is generally believed that Jacob was a son of William Robbins. More original research and documentation is suggested.

Much credit is due to Kevin K. Mittge for his tireless efforts to recover an accurate history of the Robbins family in the United States. Thank you, Kevin." Written by .... on July 5, 2005 as a part of the above posting.

Marble Rock Journal**
Marble Rock, Floyd co. Iowa
November 1909
Martin Sheldon Van Dusen was born at Keysville, Clinton Co, N.Y. on July 15th, 1827. Died November 20, 1909. Age 82 years, 4 months and 5 days. When he was fifteen years of age he went to the state of Maine, where he learned the carriage makers trade, where he continued his labor until 1850, when he re-located at Ri[c]hford, Vermont. He was united in marriage to Eliza Nears, March 25th 1852, moving to Shabbona Grove, Illinois in 1866, removing to Marble Rock, Iowa, in the spring of 1868. To this union were born eight children, as follows: Melinda, of Plano, Illinois, Lucinda, now Mrs. Gideon Ackley of Marble Rock, Iowa, Oren, Remsen, Iowa; Almon, of Los Angeles, California; Luthera, also of California; George who died in Vermont, Elmer and Lulu, Mrs. Philip Shultz who died at Marble Rock. Mr. VanDusen like the well ripened shock of corn came to his grave, ripened in years. Like the lone oak, he stood the severe storms of many summers and frosts of many winters, holding his strength, his senses and an active mind to a marked degree. Separating from home and kin at a remarkably early age he has made his way alone, thro’ the pains and hardships of life. He united with the Christian church of Marble Rock about 1889; during his later years, his increasing pleasure was found in reading the Bible and visiting with friends concerning its precious promises. For many years he engaged in wagon and carriage making and repairing at Marble Rock. Mr. and Mrs. VanDusen went to Texas in 1900, while there his wife was taken ill with a stroke of paralysis from which she died August 20th, 1901; he returned to Iowa soon after this and during recent years has lived at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ackley, who has ministered untiringly to every need of a kind and appreciating father. His end came rather unexpectedly Saturday evening, at 9:15, his spirit returning to the “Judge of all the Earth, who shall, surely, do right.” Funeral services were conducted at the house, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1909. Interment taking place at Marble Rock, West side cemetery, Revs. Manchester and Inman officiating.
[**Souce is thought to be the Marble Rock Journal, however was unable to verify as the years of 1909-1910 were destroyed or lost.]

From his obit in Dubuque Co., IA paper.
(For ease of reading, Donna Clark revised spacing, capitalization, and punctuation from this partial obit as it appeared at World Connect):
William Haggard Sr., the subject of this notice, was born in Albemarle Co., VA, on the 7 of Aug 1753 and died near Lancaster, KY on the 23rd of July 1852- age 98 years old. Soon after the close of the Revolutionary War, in which the deceased had served three campaigns, he visited the then wilderness of Kentucky, to view "the dark and bloody ground," and afterwards, in 1794 removed permanently with his family to that state. He had living at the time of his decease, six children, thirty-eight grandchildren, one hundred and forty-nine great-grandchildren, and a number of great-great-grandchildren. During the last twenty years of his life, he enjoyed a pension from the government. To but few men are allotted so many years, and even of that small number, few, comparatively speaking, have to the last been so highly blessed by the possession of their physical and mental faculties. This venerable man, we understand, continued to work in his garden and attend to various matters of business up to a period within three weeks of his death, and appeared to retain the possession of his mental faculties and was entirely conscious of approaching dissolution, until within a few moments of his last breath.

Names, dates, & places
"William Haggard... was born August 7, 1753, in Albemarle county, Virginia, and after marriage settled in Caswell county, North Carolina *, and from there moved to Kentucky and settled in Garrard county, near Lancaster, in 1794, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died on the 23rd of July, 1852, aged 98 years, 11 months, and 16 days. He served three campaigns in the Revolutionary war. The last twenty years of his life he received a pension from the government. He was a preacher, a teacher of schools, and a miller as well as a soldier.

On 20 Aug 1832 he applied for a pension. In it he stated that he entered the service in the then County of Orange (afterwards a part of it made Caswell County) in the state of N.C. as a drafted militia man under Wm Hubbard in the year 1776 for the term of three months. His 1st Col. was named Ramsey. 2nd Col. named Wm Moore and Person was his General. He was marched thru Roan Co and several other counties in N. C. and crossed the Atbin ? River near Salsbury and the Catawba at Sherod Ford. That afterward was marched back and discharged at Hillsborough in N. C.

That sometime afterward he volunteered in the Militia in the state of Va. in the county of Bedford for 3 months. His Captain was Thomas Dooley. He was marched to Williamsburg and was attached to Col. Masons Command until discharged in 1777.

He was again drafted in 1780 for 3 months and he believes that it was in N. C. in the Co. of Orange under Cap James Wilson and believes his Col was Wm Moore. His general was Wm Davidson. He was marched to Salsbury and then to the Six Mile Creek at the Camp of New Providence.

In 1782 again drafted in Orange Co., N. C. for 3 months and his Captain was Fredrick Debo-. Major was McCallan. Designated to guard the Legislature of N.C. and the general court at Hillsborough (Orange Co.).

His claim was allowed and he received $40/year.

One of the men who gave a deposition for him stated the following:

Richard Oldham, a resident of Madison Co., Ky, age 70 states that he is personally acquainted with William Haggard, a resident of Garrard Co., Ky and has been acquainted with him for at lest sixty years. He states that he served a tour of 3 months with said Haggard in 1780. He then heard Haggard speak of a tour of duty he served previously in the year 1776 as well as he now recollects under Capt. Wm Hubbard. He further states that himself and Haggard were raised in Caswell County, North Carolina and within about 3 or 4 miles of each other and resided in the same county at the time they entered the service.

Madison Co., Ky, 9 Oct 1832-Isaac Lainhart made oath that he knows that William Haggard went out under Capt Thos Dooley from the state of Va, Bedford Co. and served at the same time that the said Isaac Lainhart did which be believes was in 1777. The said Isaac Lainhart is 70 years old."

Sylvester Robbins was buried at Scaffolk Lick Cemetery in Scott, IN. He was a blacksmith.
I heard this story on several occasions while growing up:
The day he married Emma Tish Belch, Sylvester Robbins went to a grocery store and won a butter dish. When he brought it home to his new wife, he told her it was his wedding gift to her. She thought that was very funny.
When I was talking with another Hoosier who was vacationing in FL in 2002, she told me a strikingly similar story about her family. The above story may be a regional story, or who can tell, there may have been a lot of weddings in IN where free butter dishes figured into the wedding day.

In Reply to: Sylvester Robbins/ Scott Co., IN/ 1859 by Donna Forney Clark of 4099

My information on Sylvester (Robbins), albeit of uncertain documentation, is that he was the son of William Martin Robbins and Nancy Chasteen. William Martin (1821-aft. 1880) was the son of Richard Robbins Jr. (c1790-betw. 1850/1858) and Rebecca Chastain. Richard Jr. was the son of Richard Robbins Sr. (c. 1760 in Guilford (now Randolph) Co., NC d. after 1814 in Kentucky) and Catherine or Mary [--?--]. Rebecca Chastain was the daughter of Valentine Chastain (c1768-1843) and Mary Robbins (c1774-1844) - this Mary was the daughter of Jacob and Mary [--?--] Robbins. Richard Sr. may have been (documentation is lacking here), the son of Nathaniel and Ann Robbins.

In Reply to: VALENTINE ROBBINS IN WASHINGTON CO, IN. by Marie Bayles of 3206
The parents of Valentine Robbins (1813-1849) were reportedly Richard Robbins (c1790-betw. 1850-58) and Rebecca ("Betsy") Chastain (c1794-c1871). Richard, in turn, was the son of Richard and Catherine Robbins, and Richard (Sr.) is said to be the son of Nathaniel and Ann Robbins. Little is documented so far. Nathaniel was born c1740, prob. in Monmouthshire, Wales and died c1800, prob. in Shelby Co., Kentucky. He came as a child with his family to the Rowan/Guilford/Randolph Co., North Carolina area; moved to the Franklin & Montgomery Co., Virginia area, and then on to Shelby Co., Kentucky. Other Robbins lived in Henry Co., Kentucky; many went on to Decatur, Jennings, Scott, and Washington counties, Indiana. Nathaniel, by the way, was a brother of Jacob Robbins, who married Mary (said to be Wells, but, again, unproven).

Descendants of Pierre Chastain:
Shirley Chasteen:
Children of Valentine Chastain and Mary Robbins are:
+ 54 i. Rebecca7 Chastain, born Abt. 1794 in Franklin County, Virginia; died Bet. 1870 - 1871 in Scott County, Indiana, USA.
55 ii. Martin Chastain, born Abt. 1795 in Franklin Co., Virginia, USA; died September 17, 1845 in Scott Co., Indiana.
56 iii. Frances ? Chastain, born Abt. 1796.
Frances is marked as dead in Church Book ending January 1845.
57 iv. Harmon Chastain, born Abt. 1798 in Franklin County, Virginia; died Abt. 1877 in Scott County, Indiana.
58 v. Daughter Chastain, born Bet. 1800 - 1805.
Probably born circa 1800 to 1805. Tradition in Scott County says that Valentine Chastain had a daughter named Sarah Jane. This is probably Sary Shasteen who died in 1847 and is buried at Scaffold Lick, near the road in what seems to be a grave for for a fully grown person.
59 vi. Elizabeth Chastain, born Abt. 1801 in Virginia; died November 20, 1878 in Scott County, Indiana, USA. She married Nathaniel Robbins November 19, 1826; died 1874. He was Church Clerk at Scaffold Lick from July 1830 to March 1847.
60 vii. Mary Chastain, born Abt. 1806 in Kentucky, USA; died Abt. 1838 in Scott County, Indiana, USA. She married Nathaniel Chastain March 16, 1825.
Valentine Chastain performed the marriage between Mary and Nathaniel.. Nathaniel Chastain was probably a son of John and Anner Chastain despite being being listed as an heir of Valentine in 1847. This is based partly on the fact that Anner Chastain was living with Nathaniel in 1850. He is probably named as an heir of Valentine for the estate rights of his children by Mary.
+ 61 viii. Valentine Jr. Chastain, born April 03, 1808 in Shelby County, Kentucky; died Abt. 1866 in Scott County, Indiana, USA.

Rebecca Chastain, b. abt 1795, was the daughter of Valentine Chastain and Mary Robbins.
