Vonda J. McGhee, 80, of Pine Haven, Apt. 101, Lock Haven, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at the Lock Haven Hospital ECU.

She had been in failing health for several years, and had been receiving care from Southern Care Hospice for the last two and a half years.

Born in Orviston Nov. 6, 1927, Vonda was the only child of the late Ira Leo and Beulah G. (Toots) Packer Condo.

She was a member of the Bellefonte High School graduating class of 1945. She met Robert R. (Bob) McGhee of Lock Haven, and married him on Sept. 11, 1946. They had two children, the late Jeffery M. McGhee and [SURVIVOR OMITTED].

When Bob returned to active duty with the Army, she enjoyed traveling and living in Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Hanau, Germany and Texas. She returned to the Bellefonte area in 1960 when her husband was transferred to Bangkok, Thailand, where he subsequently died on Feb. 13, 1962.

Vonda graduated as an LPN from Centre Community Hospital Nursing School in 1963, where she worked until 1965. She then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to work as a private duty nurse for terminally ill patients. She returned to Lock Haven in 1973 to help care for her mother, and also worked as an LPN at Susque-View Nursing Home.

She met her best friend, her companion of over 20 years, Howard N. Hardy, on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 1975. They formed a business partnership, V&H Enterprises, based on their hobbies and interests.

They traveled to flea markets and fairs, where he sold watches, guns, knives and military memorabilia, and she demonstrated and sold Pretty Punch Embroidery. Vonda became the Northeast Region distributor for Pretty Punch of Florida, and held seminars as one of her many hobbies.

When Hardy retired from International Paper Co. in 1989, they sold their business and began wintering in Sebring, Fla. until Hardy's death on Jan. 26, 1995. In September 1996, Vonda moved to The Hampton's in Auburndale, Fla., where she resided year around until her failing health caused her to return to Lock Haven in May.

Vonda's hobbies were punch embroidery, knitting, crocheting, sewing, playing cards, bingo, dancing and traveling. She enjoyed taking cruises with Hardy and her friends to the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska.

SURVIVORS OMITTED

She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffery M. McGhee of Bellefonte, and by a grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Southern Care Hospice, care of the funeral home.

Leona Belle Holston's father was Charley Holston. Leona Belle's mother Bertha Crawford Holston died when Leona Belle was 4 days old. Before she died, Bertha Crawford Holston gave her daughter Leona Belle to be raised by Bertha's brother Clifford Lawrence Crawford and her sister-in-law Nancy Anna "Annie" Porter. Because of her deep love and affection for her new mother and father, Leona Belle used the Crawford surname rather than the Holston name. Leona Belle married Malcolm Kidd. For genealogy purposes, she is referred to as Leona Belle Holston Crawford-Kidd.

Crocket Porter, head born Dec 1835 age 63 , number years married 32, born in Wv parents born in PA , Coal Miner
Katherine Porter, wife born Feb 1861 [note from Donna Forney Clark: this date probably is 1851) age 50, number years married 32, children 8, 5 living. born in VA parents born in VA
Edgar Porter son born Nov. 1874 age 25, single, born in WV, Coal Miner

Laura Porter daughter born Feb 1886, age 14, single, born in WV
Violet Porter daughter born Aug 1895 age 4, single, born in WV
[Sylvia's note: "in researching Crocket Porter I found in 1870 and 1880 census his wife listed as Mary. As you notice in this 1900 census it lists his wife as Katherine. Based on the information listed in this census showing both Katherine and Crocket married 32 years I would have to conclude that Katherine and Mary are both the same person. This suggests his wife's full name was possibly Mary Katherine.
Approximate year of marriage for Crocket and Mary Katherine was abt. 1868 based on this census record.]

Katherine Porter, wife born Feb 1861 [note from Donna Forney Clark: this date probably is 1851) age 50, number years married 32, children 8, 5 living. born in VA parents born in VA

He worked for Inland Container in Ashtabula for over 25 years, prior to his employment and retirement from Jefferson Manufacturing.

Remembering Lois Weeth whose life passion was the study of plants
Lois attended Whittier School in Berkeley and had a long-time connection with the University of California.

Lois Margaret Weston Weeth died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 97. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt and friend who lived a full life.

Born in Los Angeles, Lois was given the nickname "Spot" for her many freckles. By the age of four she already knew her life’s passion: the study of plants. She was supported by her creative and hardworking parents, Joseph and Carol Weston, and her two rambunctious brothers, Robert and (SURVIVOR OMITTED)
When the Weston family lived in Berkeley, Lois went to Whittier School, and her brother Robert went to UC Berkeley.

Lois had a long-time connection with the University of California. When she was there, she was one of the few female students at UC Davis, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Pathology in 1943.

Her dedication to UC and her outgoing and practical nature led her to become president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, chair of the UC Davis Foundation, and ex-officio member of University of California Board of Regents. Later in life she continued her association with the University by being a docent at the UC Davis Arboretum and Bodega Marine Laboratory.

Lois met her husband-to-be, Harold Weeth, at UC Davis. They married in 1944 after he finished his studies and served in WWII. They moved to Coalinga, CA, where they established the Weeth Ranch, primarily growing alfalfa, barley and cotton. Lois managed the accounts and daily logistics of running the ranch while raising (SURVIVORS OMITTED). Eventually, she moved back to Davis, and then Bodega Bay following her divorce with her husband in 1980.

She endured many hardships throughout her life, including a particularly tragic string of deaths over the course of two years. She lost her older brother and mother months apart, and then her son in-law Herbert Wildenradt and 1-year-old granddaughter Elizabeth died in a tragic plane crash. Her daughter survived the crash and they later traveled together extensively through Europe leading plant and garden tours. Sadly, JoAnn also died unexpectedly in 2008.

This heartbreak did not keep Lois from being her ever curious and gregarious self. She continued to seek out adventures and new ways of connecting to the world. She spent many summers in the Sierras often accompanied by (SURVIVORS AND DETAILS OMITTED). Rarely did Lois leave a place where she travelled without making lifelong friends and identifying the area’s local flora.

Lois’ resiliency never wavered. With a diagnosis of macular degeneration, she decided to move from her beautiful home in Bodega Bay to Pacific Grove, where she could be closer to (SURVIVORS OMITTED) and where supportive services would be more readily available. Continuing to explore California she discovered a type of oak tree not previously known in the Boonville area, which led to further research and collaboration with Dr. John Tucker, a world renown oak expert.

Lois was inquisitive, highly intelligent and eager to share her knowledge. She was outgoing and genuinely interested in the people that she met. Generous in spirit she was ready to listen and give good council. Up until the last few months of her life she was as sharp as ever, maintaining her interests in plants, the natural world, her family, and many, many friends.

She is greatly missed.
