Genealogy Site FAQs
Q. How do I find the individual I am looking for?
A. There are a number of ways, but the simple Search function provides the most straightforward method. This can be performed on any page on the website by typing in a name in the data entry windows and clicking on the Search button. The Advanced Search form allows you to enter information about the individual you're researching and presents you with a list of possible matches from the database.
Also, click Surnames for possible different spellings of your ancestor's surname.
Q. How do I find an individual's ancestors?
A. Once you locate an individual, the easiest method is to click the Ancestors tab. This will show you a graphic display of both paternal and maternal ancestors.
Once the ancestor chart is displayed, click on the arrows located at the far right ancestor to see additional ancestors. There are a number of formats to choose from (Standard, Compact, Box, Text, Ahnentafel, and Photos & History) to display ancestors. Try clicking on the various options and see which one works best for you.
Q. What if I want to see an individual's descendants?
A. The tab marked Descendants can be used to display the descendants of an individual. The default presentation will be the Text format, but you can easily switch to the Standard (graphic) or Register formats to display the information layout that you prefer.
Q. What are the small icons beside a descendant’s name?
A. Once you are in the Descendants Standard or Text format, clicking on the small Descendancy Chart icons will display a specific branch of descendants from the originally selected ancestor up to the descendant next to the icon.
Q. Is there a way to tell if two individuals are related?
A. Yes, the Relationship tab will show a graphic display of all the people between two relatives. To use this function, locate the first individual and then click the Relationship tab. Then click the Find button to locate the second person to be displayed. Once you have the two people selected, click the Calculate button to display their relationship.
Q. The Timeline function looks interesting. What is it?
A. A timeline is displayed for an individual when the Timeline tab is clicked. The timeline shows important events in history that occurred during the life of an individual or a group of individuals. It gives you a unique perspective to see what was going on in the world during the lives of your ancestors.
Q. If I see a mistake in the information presented can I correct it?
A. The Suggest tab allows you to send corrections, updates, comments, questions, or any other information to the website administrator. Information concerning the individual you are referencing is automatically attached to the message when you make a suggestion using the Suggest tab. The website administrator will take your suggestion and add it to the database in the next update cycle.
Q. Is there a way to print the display without all the headers and icons?
A. Yes, click on the Print link located above the control tabs. A Print Preview in simplified format will appear. Right mouse click on the Print Preview window, and then click Print.
Of course, if you are wanting to just take some notes from different pages and later print them all up, the easiest way to do that is to “copy and paste” any text onto a text editor (such as Microsoft Word) in your computer. Likewise, you can right mouse click on any photo or scanned document on this website and save it on your computer.
Q. What are the menu bar and all the icons that are located at the upper right of the page?
A. These icons access additional information that is contained in the database. Click on one of the items that appear below each option.
Q. What are bookmarks and how do I use them?
A. Bookmarks are a way of keeping track of pages that you might like to re-visit at a later time. You can easily bookmark any page on this website, and a personal bookmark folder will be created just for you. To summon your bookmarks, click on the Bookmarks tab on the drop down menu on any page. They are not erased by your departure and will still be present when you return to this site in the future. Your bookmarks are stored until you delete them.
