Peter N. Voorheis, son of John H. and Maria (Kershaw) Vorrheis, was born 08 Feb 1833 and baptized at Readington’s Dutch Reformed Church on 03 May 1833.

By the 1850 census, his parents had moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana and, by 1860 had come to southeastern Otter Creek Township in Tama County, Iowa, but Peter was not enumerated in their household.

He married Louisa, daughter of Ashberry and Sarah (Ritter) Baltimore, whose family had also been in St. Joseph County, Indiana as of the 1850 census and, by 1860, had settled in Floyd County, Iowa. Peter’s younger brother Rulif Seborn Vorhes married Louisa Baltimore’s sister, Sarah Ann, and also settled at Floyd County.

Peter and Louisa’s known children were John D., Orville M., Rulif ‘Ralph,’ William, Sarah, Ethan, George, and Peter Ross Vorhes.
