      Note:
His father William Robbins was a brother to Absalom Robbins. Nathaniel and Nancy Robbins moved to Hurricane Township, Bond County, IL about 1818 and then moved to Decatur County, IN in August of 1821. Nathaniel (called Uncle Natty by other family members) was elected first Justice of the Peace of Sandcreek Township. There were three other candidates for the office and a total of 9 votes cast! On October 7, 1822 he was impaneled on the first grand jury in the county; he supposedly had the largest medical library in the state. He was the largest landowner in Sandcreek Township and one of the wealthiest men in the county.

According to one story, Nathaniel Robbins decided to emigrate to Oregon when he learned that the county had voted to purchase railroad stock and he was afraid of being "taxed" to death. Other stories attribute the emigration solely to the continual westward movement of the Robbins family. It is also important to keep in mind that Nathaniel's sister, Theodoshia, who had married John Herren, had already immigrated to Oregon in 1845. Undoubtedly letters were exchanged between the two families and this stirred the interest of Nathaniel and his family in Indiana. Joseph Lane, Governor of the Oregon Territory, was a friend of Nathaniel Robbins and supposedly encouraged him to emigrate to Oregon. Also, Bethiah Robbins, Nathaniel's mother, died in Dec of 1850 and less than a year later Nathaniel Robbins and his family left the county. It is believed that he waited until his aged mother died (age 90 at the time of her death) before leaving for Oregon.

Whatever the reason, September 15, 1851, the Robbins family left Decatur County, IN and travelled to Randolph County, Misouri where Nathaniel and Nancy's son William Franklin Robbins was already living with his family. They arrived at William's on October 12, 1851 and stayed there for winter. In the spring of 1852, Nathaniel's family was joined by Jacob Robbins Jr. and his family. They all left Randolph County on April 15, 1852 amd set out across the Missouri on the way west. In Nebraska cholera struck the emigrants and three daughters and one son-in-law of Nancy and Nathaniel died within a few days of each other. By the time they had arrived in the Williamette Valley in Oregon, four other family members had died of the disease.

After meeting with his old friend, Joseph Lane, in Portland, OR, Nathaniel and Nancy settled in Oregon City until they could file for a donation land claim. Their claim lay just a few miles west of Oregon City. Their children lived nearby. In August and September 1857, Nathaniel was a member of Oregon's Constitutional Convention, held in Salem, and he was also on the committee to establish schools. He was issued a license to practice medicine in Oregon Territory.

According to family members, Dr. Robbins was going to see someone who was ill when he drowned on Tualatin River on December 16, 1863. He was on a flatboat or raft and was poling across the river when the pole broke, throwing him into the water. The river was at flood stage and he drowned as he was swept over the falls at Moore's Mill. He was buried int he Robert Bird Cemetery, near Stafford. Nancy Robbins later lived with their son, Nathaniel Norvai Robbins, and on April 30, 1880 she died. She is buried beside Nathaniel.
