Information contained in the Archives from Cindy Howser: Zoah, located about three miles northwest of Scottsburg was a comparatively new settlement in the county. In 1836, Warren Meranda (1807-1847), Clark Reynolds (1801-1863) and Martin Comer bought land where the church and cemetery now are located. Some time between 1837 and 1842 a log school was built on the knoll overlooking Ox Valley to the west. The present day church is very prosperous and the cemetery is actively in use. The church was built in 1889, and remodeled and added to in 1943-44. (from 1990 cemetery book). Most of the information that concerns the Coatney family, especially information concerning the families related to the marriage of Archibald Coatney and Mary McIntosh, including names, dates, places, census reports, documents, photos, and stories, is from the Don Coatney Archives.
Don Coatney: "My father Albert Edison Coatney was born in 1902 and in his writing has referred to William J. Johnson as "Buffalo Bill" Johnson. In 1888 William J. Johnson along with his wife Mary Eveline Townsend Morgan Johnson and my Grandfather Benjamin Harrison Coatney with his wife Hattie Magnolia Morgan and their two young sons moved from Indiana to Arkansas living in Perla, Malvern, Hot Springs and possibly other areas. Soon a couple of my Grandfather's brothers, Charles Edward Coatney and George Combe Coatney, joined them there. They stayed until 1895 (leaving in somewhat of a hurry as Benjamin had heard the rumor that the constable was after him for committing the crime of taking pictures for profit on a Sunday). They moved to Indianapolis, but I am not sure if the Johnson's came with them."
