Graves, Johnson: Estate Statement concerning Johnson Graves (b. 1802-1804 & d. 1879) **SOME INDIVIDUALS APPEAR MORE THAN ONCE IN OUR TREE AND HAVE BEEN LINKED ACCORDINGLY.
Estate Statement concerning Johnson Graves regarding state residency of plaintiffs Elza? Graves (perhaps this could have been Elizabeth Graves, Martha Goss Barton Graves' step-grandniece) and Martha Graves, signed by Hamilton Barton, dated December 13, 1879, came from Melissa Hennigar Parrish. Melissa Parrish scanned the original document from the John Zentmyre probate/estate file which came from the Alameda McCullough Library at the Genealogy and Research Center of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association in Lafayette, Indiana. TCHA is online at http://www.tcha.mus.in.us/ and is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting and preserving information and artifacts relating to the history and culture of Tippecanoe, Indiana, and its citizens. It currently maintains the Moses Fowler House, the Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum, Fort Ouiatenon Blockhouse at Fort Ouiatenon Historic Park, and the Genealogy and Research Center. Memberships and requested research are available for a fee. Donna Clark: I would be happy to e-mail the original scan of this document if requested.

"....[concerning] the family of Johnson and Martha Graves.... Martha [Graves] was born in Georgia as were 2 of the "Graves" children, named Hamilton (age 16) and Martha (age 12). .... this was actually Martha Goss Barton ... her husband [John Wesley Barton, b. 1830] had died and she had gone to Indiana ... and remarried. [Sentence omitted] She had married Johnson Graves in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana on October 27, 1865. [Sentence omitted] The children, Hamilton and Martha Graves listed in the 1870 census are actually Bartons. Incidentally by this time Martha Goss Barton and her husband Johnson Graves had 1 child of their own; Lucinda Graves, age 3 in 1870. Also in the household was Johnson Graves (Jr.), age 15, a son of Johnson Sr.'s by a previous marriage."

JOHN GRAVES OF FREDERICK CO., VA:
      Kenneth V. Graves:
"Johnson Graves (19) was born Sept. 1805 (or 30 July 1802) in Virginia, died 10 (or 30) Jan. 1879 in Tippecanoe Co., IN, and was buried in Pierce Cem., Battleground, Tippecanoe Co. (The 30 July 1802 date is from the cemetery records; it is the same birthdate as his brother John.) His will is on record in Tippecanoe Co. He first married Nancy Cain on 6 Dec. 1825 (or 1824) in Coshocton Co., OH. She died about 1842. He married second Martha Ann Jones on 27 (or 21) Nov. 1843 in Tippecanoe Co., IN. She was born 20 March 1814 in VA (her age is listed as 36 on the 1850 Tippecanoe Twp., Tippecanoe Co., IN census, dwelling 385). According to information sent by R-4 “It was an unfortunate marriage that finally ended in a divorce in 1855.” The first five children were born in Ohio and the others in Indiana (although one source says they were all born in Ohio). Johnson married third Martha (Goss) Barton, daughter of John Goss of NC, on 29 Oct. 1865. Martha was born about 1828, possibly in Georgia, died 2 April 1895 in Tippecanoe Co., and was buried in Pierce Cem. She and her daughter Lucinda were recorded on the 1880 census in Tippecanoe Twp., page 175C." [Donna Forney Clark: note that this source says Martha Goss was the daughter of John Goss of NC, not the daughter of Matthew Goss of SC as I have it in our database. See the identical Martha Goss in this database for Matthew Goss descendancy.] [Donna Forney Clark: note that 1855 is the divorce date of Johnson Graves and Martha Ann (Young) Jones, the same date as the birth of Johnson Graves, Jr.]
