John Melvin (Mel) Stubbs
1908 - 1990
"Recess was his favorite subject in school, and he ran the mile in track in
college. During the 30's he operated his father's ranch south of Bassett [NE]
and later ran a food store. In 1944 he moved his family to Brunswick,
Nebraska and ran 'Mel's Tavern,' which was a combination beer and card
room and a package liquor store. In 1952 Mel moved his family to
Phillipsburg, Kansas and worked as a traveling salesman until he retired
in 1969. He had a great sense of humor, always looked forward and grew
the best strawberries and tomatoes in town. He was president of the
Lions Club in Bassett and ran for County Clerk of Rock County, Nebraska
but lost. (information provided by John Melvin Stubbs II; Sept. 1996)"
