      William Price Alderman
" William Price Alderman was born Feb. 16, 1896, the sixth child of the 10 children born to Wm. Henry and Anna Rosailee Peterson Alderman in the living quarters above Rock County Bank of Newport, NE.
Price joined the armed services on June 25, 1918, took his basics at Ft. Riley, KS, and then to Camp Merit, N.J., where the troops were put on the ship "Empress of Russia" for the trip overseas. However, Price contracted the flu and was later discharged on Dec. 31, 1918 at Ft. Dodge, IA. Upon his return home from the service he, his father, his brothers and brothers-in-law, all worked phases of the Newport haying business.
On March 28, 1937 he was united in marriage to Grace May Utter, a school teacher who also was a lifelong resident of Rock County, except for a few years in her early life spent with her parents in Boyd and Keya Paha counties.
Price baled hay and ranched seven miles north and one mile east of Newport until 1954, when he and Grace built and operated Alderman's service station and lunch room on south edge of Newport at the junction of Highways 20 and 137. They continued to operate the station until1968 when they retired. After retirement they remained active in community and family affairs.
He proudly joined the American Legion in 1919 and remained a continuous and faithful member for 66 years. He was also a member of the Veterans of WWII.
Price and Grace were married 47 years at the time of his death, Oct. 12, 1984. He was laid to rest at the Newport cemetery.
He was very proud of the fact that an Alderman had lived in Newport for over 100 years. His uncle, Sterling Price Alderman having come to Newport about 1881 or 1882 as the first depot agent in Newport and Bassett."
