John M. Eador:
How Paul Griffith & Agnes Morton Met
My Grandfather, Paul Griffith, born November 10,1891 in Nevada, Missouri, was a cook in the Army in World War 1 and was deployed with the 213 Aero Squadron on the S.S. TUSCANIA. The TUSCANIA was a Luxury Liner that was converted to a troop carrier. It had a British Registry and was owned by CUNARD Steamship Co. and was managed by the ANCHOR LINE. It was travelling in a Convoy from New York Harbor enroute to France. On the night of February 5th 1918, the Tuscania was Torpedoed by the German U-Boat, U 77(Submarine), sending her to the bottom of the North Channel Sea off the Northern coast of Ireland and only seven miles off the coast of Islay, Scotland. Two hundred sixty six American soldiers died that night and a large portion of those were killed on the coast of Islay when the Rocks tore their life boats apart and drowned them. My Grandfather was among the survivors of that tragic night. Several of the survivors were placed on Burial detail, and a photo of those men appears on the Tuscania web page. My Grandfather is the fourth one from the right on the back row. While in Scotland, my Grandfather had the opportunity to meet Agnes Morton, a young Scottish girl of eighteen years of age. On June 18, 1918 they were married in Wallacetown, Ayr, Scotland. It is believed Agnes came to the States in 1918 and made a trip back to Scotland, whereon February 1st 1919 my Mother, Mary Minerva Griffith, was born. On December 3rd 1921 my Grandfather brought my Mother to the States by way of Ellis Island in New York, and they came to Nevada, Missouri. In 1922 my Grandmother came to Ellis Island New York with their Son Bennie Byron Griffith. They went to Kansas City, Mo. and to Nevada later. Paul and Agnes lived on the Griffith Family farm South of Nevada. After living there for a number of years, they sold the farm and moved to California. They lived several places in California including Bakersfield and were living in Calistoga, where Grandfather died on November 30 1949. He was buried in Sonoma Valley. Grandma re-married Glen Philip Crout on November 29 1951 in San Jose where they then moved to Middletown, California. In later years they moved to Nevada, Missouri where they both passed away just months apart in February 1977. Both are buried in Moore Cemetery South of Nevada.
