      James Russell Alderman
      "James Russell Alderman was born Jan. 1, 1891 at Northville, S. D., the fourth child of the10 children born to Wm. Henry and Anna Rosailee Peterson Alderman. At the age of three Jim moved with his family from South Dakota to Newport, where he attend elementary school.
      After his schooling he worked with his father, uncles, nephews, brothers and cousins in all phases of the haying business
      In 1917, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and took his training at Camp Dodge, IA. He served a short time overseas in France and was discharged as a private Feb 28. 1919 (Of interest was the United States government contracted for hay to be shipped to France to feed horses and mules and each bale had to be tagged as having been inspected to meet U.S. quality standards, (sic) quantities of "War Time" hay was (sic) shipped from Newport).
      On July 20, 1920 al Bassett, James was united in marriage to Martha Elizabeth Brown, daughter of James and Mary Alice Brown of Mariaville. To this union two children were born Evelyn Mae and Lloyd James.
      Jim and Mattie spent most of their married life around Newport and in 1931 they took over the ice cream parlor from their nieces. Inez and Laura Thompson. They served hand cranked ice cream, coffee, confections and pop.
      A short time later converting the parlor to a cafe and then in 1933 after the repeal of prohibition, Jim was issued the ninth license for beer in the state of Nebraska. They ran this business until 1936 when they sold to Bill and Charlie Kopp.
      From 1940-1945 Jim worked at Climax company in the Molydenum (sic ) mine, helped build the munition (sic) depot at Igloo. S. D., Kearney air base, Sutton air base, Offutt field in Omaha, and the air base at Prince Rupert. Canada.
      Upon his return home he resumed baling and hauling hay until he was 75 years old.
      Martha (Mattie) was born at Bonesteel, S.D., March 28, 1895 in the same year the Brown family moved to Mariaville, where she attended school.
      Pleasant memories of her school days and schoolhood (sic) chums at the Mariaville school remained with her all her life. She enjoyed feeding chickens, gathering eggs, milking cows, cooking. canning, baking bread, sewing and crocheting. She was a loving mother and grandmother. The welfare of her entire family was always uppermost in her mind.
      Jim and Mattie were married 54 years.
      Jim died at Ainsworth in I974 and Mattie in 1975, also at Ainsworth. Both were laid to rest at Newport."
