      Harlan Henry Coatney, the son of Ray H. and Mona LeBaron Coatney was born May 10, 1917 on a farm near Ada. He passed away Wednesday, August 14, 1996 at Salina Regional Health Center, at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 4 days.
      He grew up on the farm at Ada and graduated from Pittsburg State College. He was a teacher and principal of Ada High School. In 1964, he became a social worker with the Ottawa County Welfare Department. He was District Director of the Salina District of Social and Rehabilitation of Kansas until retiring in 1986. Harlan was united in marriage to Carol Foster Jagger December 27, 1953 at Ada. She preceded him in death July 2, 1994.
      He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church at Ada, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher; Minneapolis Lodge 143, AF&AM; Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion and the Minneapolis Planning Commission. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
      Survivors include a son Howard Coatney of Overland Park; three daughters, Sara Thompson and Corinne Schur, both of Minneapolis and Barbara Echo-Hawk of Denver, CO; and eleven grandchildren. He was also precede in death by a brother, Ray I. Coatney.
      The funeral was held Saturday, August 17 at the Ada Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Turner officiating. Vocalists were Pamela Barker and Keith Bacon. Avis Shafer was the organist and Jennifer Barker was the pianist.
      Casket bearers were Douglas Beauchamp, Ronald Wilson, Joseph Echo-Hawk, Gerald Denison, Jesse Rupp, Joshua Echo-Hawk and J.P. Metzler. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Ada. A Masonic service was conducted by Minneapolis Lodge 143. Shields Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
      The family suggests memorials to the Antioch Baptist Church, Ada.
