The following exerpt appears at the USGENWEB Project Jefferson County, OH which is administered by Danice Ryan. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohjeffer/doylebioindex/biographyindex.html
This exerpt comes from 20th Century History of Steubenville and Jefferson County, Ohio by Joseph Beatty Doyle.
J. C. AULT, who deals extensively in real estate and insurance at Steubenville, O., comes from one of the old established families of Jefferson County and was born in 1843 in Island Creek Township, near Steubenville, a son of George Ault.
George Ault was born in 1802 in Island Creek, and was a son of Andrew Ault, who was one of the prominent early settlers of Jefferson County, who located on a tract of timber land in Island Creek Township in 1797. George Ault was reared on the farm, which he helped to clear, and in 1852 went to California, where he remained until about 1879, at which time he returned to Jefferson County where he followed farming the remainder of his life.
J. C. Ault was reared in Island Creek Township, attended the local schools and the academy at Wellsville, where he was a student until the beginning of the Civil War, when he enlisted in Company H, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served three years in the army, participating in many important battles, including those of Pittsburgh Landing, Stone River, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, where he was wounded in December, 1863, and also engaged in numerous skirmishes. His discharge was received at Chattanooga, in 1864, at which time he was quarter master sergeant of the regiment. After returning to Jefferson County he engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1879. He then traveled for two years and in 1885 engaged in the fire insurance business which he has followed continuously since at Steubenville, and also deals extensively in real estate. Mr. Ault has been prominently identified with the development of oil in Jefferson County, and in partnership with Mr. Linduff, drilled the first oil well that connected with the pipe line in Jefferson County.
Mr. Ault was married in 1865 to Mary L. Jewett, of Island Creek Township and they have had the following children: Frank, who is employed by the W & W. S. Walker Wholesale Notion House; May, who is the wife of James H. Mosel, head of the Mosel-Johnson Grocery Company; Abbie, who is the wife of Frank McGee, mechanical engineer of the Carnegie Steel Company, of Mingo and Bellaire; and Howard J., who died at the age of seven years.
Mr. Ault is politically a Republican, and his religious connection is with the Second Presbyterian Church, of which he is a trustee. He is fraternally a member of the I. O. O. F., Jefferson Lodge, No. 6, K. of P., Steubenville Lodge, No. 1, Stanton Post, G.A.R., the Elks and is a director of the Stanton Monument Association.

Mary Lawson Jewett Ault
Birth: Dec. 18, 1844
Death: Apr. 16, 1926
The Steubenville Herald Star, Saturday, April 17, 1926
Blessed with a long span of years. Mrs. Mary Lawson Ault, widow of the late Josiah C. Ault who passed away seven years ago, entered into rest at her home, 833 North Fifth street, on Friday at 2:45 p.m. Her death came in peaceful manner, a sleeping away, with her children, dutifully, tearfully and prayerfully at her bedside. Mrs. Ault was 81 years of age December 18, 1925. Though she maintained good health in her declining years, there was a perceptible failing, and then came a fall in the house on Saturday, fracturing her hip, and the shock caused complications that brought her life to a close in the eventide of years.
Mrs. Ault was born on the Jewett farm, near the Country Club and was the daughter of Summer Jewett and Priscilla Sweatt, both deceased. The brick house on the Jewett place was built in 1838 and the fourth generation reside there. After her marriage to Mr. Ault, they resided on the farm a few years, and then removed to this city over half a century ago. The couple whose union was a happy one celebrated their golden wedding ten years ago.
These children survive a loving and devoted mother; Frank J. Ault, May, wife of James Mosel and Abbie, wife of Frank McGee all of this city; one sister Mrs. John W. Tope who lived with Mrs. Ault, and a brother Frank Jewett on the home place. Mrs. Ault was an excellent Christian woman, who in her active life was a regular attendant on the means of grace at the Westminster Presbyterian Church; also at the Second Presbyterian Church where she was baptized and at Pleasant Hill Church. Her sphere of influence was the home, where her fine character and womanly qualities molded the life of her children fitting them for their various spheres in life in admirable way, causing them to call her blessed in memory. Her death will be a matter of deep regret to many intimate friends, who appreciated her (illegible) excellent (illegible) and personality.
