JOHN FULTON BURGESS, 92, of Millsboro, formerly of Leivisy, W.Va., Long Neck and Lake City, Fla., died, after a long illness, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in his home in the company of his family.

Mr. Burgess was born Nov. 6, 1910, in Comfort, W.Va., son of the late John Anderson Burgess and Mary Margaret Toney Burgess.

He served in the U.S. Army at various duty stations in Hawaii from 1930 to 1932, after which he was honorably discharged.

Mr. Burgess was a coal miner and tipple operator for the Red Parrot Coal Co. in West Virginia for 37 years following his Army service - he had done similar work before his military service - and also worked in sawmills and on railroads throughout the mining area. When the coal mines shut down periodically, he would support his family by farming, becoming famous for his half-runner green beans. As a result of one of the mine closings, he and his family moved to Silver Spring, Md., where he worked as a security guard for Geico Insurance Co. He then worked in construction as a drywall finisher for private homes in Newark. He was engaged in this occupation from 1957 until his retirement in 1962.

During his lifetime, he was an avid gardener, raising various crops on his property in Delaware and later in various homes he owned in Florida, the last being in Lake City. He enjoyed watching baseball games and was a dedicated Atlanta Braves fan. He was a fan of crossword puzzles, also, and enjoyed telling stories and jokes to family and friends.
Family gatherings were one of his greatest pleasures, and he was a much-beloved grandfather and role model. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout West Virginia, especially the state parks, and throughout Florida.

Mr. Burgess was a strong member of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Union all his adult life, and was a dedicated advocate for the rank-and-file mine worker.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Josie Gilbert; and a brother, Percy Burgess.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillian B. Burgess; three sisters, Margaret King and Helen Arnold, both of Naples, Fla., and Alice Kidd of Lynchburg, Va.; three sons and three daughters-in-law, John P. and Betty Lou Burgess and David F. and Joyce C. Burgess, all of Middletown, and Edward F. and Jacqueline Burgess of Long Neck; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn J. Redmond and John A. Redmond III of Sykesville, Md; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.

Burial was in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, near Millsboro.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163.
