Donna Forney Clark:
Birth and death for Nancy Toney vary. I took Margaret Porter's dates because they were so specific. Some researchers have Nancy's death date as 1908. Margaret was born in 1891, so she probably remembered the date of the death of her grandmother.

Nancy Toney Porter was listed as 70 years old in the 1910 census which would support a later death date than 1908.

Margaret Lillian "Marnie" Porter's notes:
Robert Toney, Sr. and his brother Poindexter Toney were the first settlers on the Big Coal River, then Virginia, now WV. When the land west of the Allegheny Mountains was opened for settlement, Congress gave large land grants to soldiers who wanted to settle there. Robert Toney received a land grant on Big Coal River extending from Joe's Creek along Big Coal River for five or six miles, including all of Toney's Branch. At the same time, his brother Poindexter Toney received a large land grant farther down the river, including Peytona.
Robert, Toney, Sr. and Poindexter Toney came to Big Coal River, staked their claim, planted a crop, then went back east for their families. When they returned they found that Indians had burned their cabins and bears had destroyed their crops.
Robert Toney, Sr. had a son Robert Toney, Jr. He was born on the new land and lived there all his life. He was active in politics and served in the Virginia Legislature which met in Williamsburg, VA. He rode horseback from Big Coal Creek to Williamsburg to attend.
Robert Toney, Sr. had a stroke and was paralyzed the last ten years of his life. After his death, his daughter Nancy and husband John Armstrong Porter moved into the home which now belonged to their son Andrew.
The family graveyard is in the corner of the garden near the house. When Andrew sold the home in 1911, he deeded the grave to the dead. I believe it is one half acre. The deed is on record in the courthouse in Madison, WV.
Information regarding the Toneys and the Porters was given to me by my grandparents, Nancy and John Armstrong Porter and my father Andrew Crocket Porter. Information regarding the children of Robert Toney, Jr. was given to me by his daughter Izora Toney Thomas who is now deceased. Signed: Margaret Lillian Porter on June 28, 1988

Thomas Foster Porter married Paralle "Pearl" Kirk on March 26, 1885. Pearl died in 1889 just a few days after the birth of Mary Foster Porter.
Thomas and the children then lived with his parents John Armstrong Porter and Nancy Porter, as recorded in the 1900 census.
Mary Foster Porter (child of Thomas and Paralle "Pearl" Kirk Porter) married on December 21, 1904 to Elliott Alexander "Zander" Jarrell b. April 7, 1876 (Boone County, WV) d.October 25, 1967 (Kanawha County, WV). Elliott was buried in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV. Mary and Elliott had 3 children.
Anna "Marie" Jarrell (child of Elliott and Mary Porter Jarrell) was born February 28, 1906 in WV. According to my grandmother, Marie was raised by the Crawfords.
Anna "Marie" Jarrell married Harry Lee Goodykoontz August 16, 1920 in Franklin County, OH. Marie lied about her age stating she was 19 years old, when she was actually 14 years old.
