Stover, Okey Ray (1894-1990): “Devil Anse” Hatfield Family

Group/ Pet/ Dog photo of the William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield family was taken about 11 miles up Beech Fork from Devon, Mingo Co., WV., in April 1897. Information about the “Devil Anse” Hatfield family can be found at this site in the Documents section under Okey R. Stover in his Raleigh Co. history of UPPER PAINT CREEK.

*** IN THE SECOND ROW (L-R) (lady with baby to boy with pistol) are Mrs. Mary Howes [Mary Hensley-Simpkins-Howes] (#daughter of Anderson) (baby in her arms is Louvisa Howes [Simpson]) & William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield & Mrs. Louvisa (#Chafin) Hatfield (#wife of Anderson) & Mrs. William Anderson "Cap" Hatfield, Jr.[Nancy Elizabeth Hatfield] (baby in her arms is [Robert Elliot] “Bob” Hatfield) & Louise Hatfield who is the small girl beside her & Mr. William Anderson "Cap" Hatfield, Jr. who is holding a rifle pointing right & Coleman Hatfield (Anderson's son) who is holding a pistol.

*** IN THE BACK ROW (L-R) are Rose Lee Hatfield (#daughter of Anderson) & [Detroit] “Troy” Hatfield (#son of Anderson) & Betty Hatfield [Caldwell] (#daughter of Anderson) & Elias Hatfield (#son of Anderson) & Tom Chafin (#nephew of William Anderson) & Joe [D.] Hatfield (#son of William Anderson) & [Ock] "OK" [Damron] who was a hired hand of “Devil Anse” & [Shepard] "Sheppie" Hatfield (#son of Cap) & [Levicy] Louvisa Hatfield (girl standing at corner of house)(#daughter of Cap). *** The man standing to the right of the girl is Bill [Border] Barden, the friend of the family who arranged for the photograph to be taken. Barden also was the store manager at Devon, Mingo Co., at the mouth of Beech Fork.

*** Note: Amanda Douglass’ father came across a copy of this photograph when Clyde Pinson was running for congress in WV. Pinson told Amanda’s father that the photographer had gotten word out through that locale that if the Hatfields would "come down" he wanted to photograph the whole clan. That happened and Pinson, who was in the coal industry and in politics and had many connections, was given a copy of that photograph, probably by a Hatfield descendant.
