 | Shivertaker, Michael (1804-1854) & Abigail Elizabeth "Abby" Higginbotham (1806-1854) Residence photo of the Shiverdecker Homestead in Poca, Putnam County, WV, was provided by Rennie Cartwright, who kindly showed us around his property in Putnam Co., WV, in August 2000. His property is the former Shiverdecker homestead owned by Michael Shivertaker & Abigail Elizabeth "Abby" Higginbotham Shivertaker. Mr. Cartwright later wrote us that he and his father painted the house in the mid-1940's. Mr. Cartwright's grandmother told him there used to be a breezeway that went right through the middle of the house with a room upstairs over top of the breezeway. In later years, it was enclosed and 3 rooms were built on the back. Mr. Cartwright's daughter had the home put on the Historical Registry in Putnam County, WV. The old house burned down sometime between 1991-1995 due to arson. The electricity had been turned off years before the fire destroyed it. |

Clark, M.D. This land was formerly owned by Michael Shivertaker & Abigail Elizabeth "Abby" Higginbotham Shivertaker and was shown to us in August 2000 by its current owner Rennie Cartwright. |

Steve Hrivnak:
"Michael owned 400 acres of timberland on Manilla Creek where the house still stands. The house sits between WVA mountains. The road (hollow) between the two mountains is called Shiverdecker Hollow. The hollow is perpendicular to Manilla Creek. In its day, it must have been quite a mansion. It has 9 rooms." The house is located in Putnam Co. (Bill Cartwright owns it and used to live in it.)
From a letter document in Steve Hrivnak's notes.

"The house burned in 1995, but the land is still beautiful.... In August 2000, we visited Shiverdecker Holler, the small cemetery, and the old homestead land. We also talked with Bill Cartwright who owns the Shivertaker Homestead."
