Michael served in the Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War. There is a plaque in the courthouse lobby, Eaton, Preble Co., OH that honors Michael Shivertaker as a Revolutionary War Soldier.

In 1781, Michael served in the Revolutionary War as he recollected below in his application for a Revolutionary War Pension.

      Preble County Ohio

On this 21st day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two. Personally appears in open Court before the Honorable Judge of the court of common plea. Now sitting in for the county of Preble and State of Ohio, Michael Sheverdecker, a resident of Monroe Township in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, aged 70 years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of this act of Congress, passed June 7th 1832, that he entered the service of the United States Union. The following named officers and served as herein stated, that sometime in the month of May, can not recollect the year he was drafted or called out in the county of Fredrick, in the state of Virginia. To guard Burgoynes prisoners at Winchester Barracks in said county and state and that he served at Winchester in guarding the said prisoners about three months.

During this tour(?), he was in no regularly organized company. Was under the command of two Corporals and two sergeants. He does not recollect their names, but knows that he was engaged from sometime in May until sometime in August making three months service. That sometime in the month of August 1781, he was drafted in Fredrick County Virginia, in Captain Vance Bush's Company and was transferred to Captain Bell's Company of Virginia Militia and was marched directly to ???? quarters at York Town Virginia, where the main Army lay besieging Corwallis and remained there in this service and fought under the General Washington.

After the surrender of the British Army, he marched to Winchester escorting and guarding the prisoners. The prisoners that were taken to that place. Served at least two months. Got a written discharge, but has lost it. Shortly afterwards, he entered the service as a substitute for one Philip Miles(?) at the said county of Fredrick for Capt. Vance Bush. This was sometime in the winter, he thinks. January 1782 was marched to the Barracks, distance from Winchester about eight miles, and was engaged at this place about six weeks in guarding the prisoners which had been captured in York Town and left at this place when he was discharged after serving six weeks. And the department does declare that he did serve the tour(?) of duty aforesaid making approximately six months and a half service in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. And that he has no documentary evidence of his said service and that he knows of no person whose evidence he can procure who can testify to his said services. He had a written discharge which he has lost. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. He further says that he has no record of his age and thinks from the best information he can get he was born in the year 1762 in Fredrick County, Virginia and that he lived in the said county of Fredrick and state of Virginia when called into service and served in the militia of that state. And since the Revolutionary War he lived in Kanawha County in the state of Virginia. And from that place he came to Preble County, Ohio where he now resides and has resided for seven years east? part?. And that he is known to Jonathan Shurley(?) and John Indy(?) who resides in his present neighborhood who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services as a soldier of the Revolutionary War. Sworn to and subscribed this day and year aforesaid.

      LAND GRANT RECORDS:

In recent research, I found a Northern Neck land grant for Jacob Shiverdeker in Frederick County, Virginia for May 13, 1771. I noticed in the online THE KANAWHA FAMILY TREE PROJECT OCTOBER 07, 2004, Jacob as named as the father of the Michael Shiverdecker who was born in about 1762 in Frederick County, VA. Since not many Shiverdeckers are found in early records, this may be the right Jacob Shiverdecker.

Below are records of land grants issued by the Virginia Land Office (from Archives in Virginia):

On May 13, 1771, Jacob Shiverdeker (grantee) in Frederick County, Northern Neck Grants--120 3/4 acres.

On August 30, 1830, Michael Shiverdecker (grantee) is in Kanawha County land grant records--70 acres.

On November 30, 1838, Luke Shiverdecker (grantee) is in Kanawha County land grant records--304 acres.

On August 2, 1852, Luke Shiverdecker (grantee) is in Kanawha County land grant records--175 acres.
