Mary Francis Moody was the daughter of Edward Moody of Essex and Albemarle Co., Virginia. She was born abt. 1740-45 probably in Goochland or Albemarle Co., Virginia. She married Robert Lilly 1759-1763 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. Robert Lily was on later records with at least two of Edward Moody's sons, John and Edmund. Robert Moody, who sometimes is erroneously listed as Mary Moody's father, moved his entire family to North Carolina in 1749, well before Mary married Robert Lilly. Robert Moody and Edward Moody are DNA matches, so they might have been brothers, but EDWARD, not Robert, was the father of Mary Frances Moody Lilly.
(Janice McAlpine: Robert and Ann Moody of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Virginia, did have a daughter Frances, but she died November 1732, in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Virginia. Her death is recorded in the vestry book and register of Bristol Parish. (See, "The vestry book and register of Bristol Parish, Virginia, 1720-1789," C. G. Mary Frances Moody was born November 1732 in Briston Parish, Prince George Co., Virginia, and died Unknown in Giles or Monroe Co., Virginia.
"The Lillys of America are descended from Sirs Robert and John DeLisle of the Castle of Lillie, in Normandy, France. They came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and for their valuable service, the monarch gave them much land and property. Their descendants settle in various parts of the British Isles, branches becoming known as DeLisle, Oelille, Lisle, Lyle, Lylly, Lyllie, Lillie, Lilley, and Lilly. The ancestor of the American Souther Branch of Lilly's was John Lilly, the immigrant who came to America in 1633, with Leonard Calvert, a brother of Lord Baltimore. John Lilly, the immigrant, settle in Charles River County, Virginia. He was appointed one "Viewers of Tobacco" important position at that time, as tobacco was a medium of exchange.
In 1642, Charles River County was abolished and its territory became a part of York County, Virginia. On June 20 of that year, John Lilly and wife secured a land grant of 350 acres situated in Milford Haven Creek, York County, Virginia. Milford Haven was in that portion of York County which became Gloucester County in 1651, and Mathews County in 1790. According to the "Records of Colonial Cloucester County, Virginia", compiled by Mrs. Polly Cary Mason, the "Roxbury" lands now in Mathews County, Virginia are a part of the original grant to John Lilly in 1642, and inherited by his descendants.
John Lilly, the immigrant died soon after 1642, as his widow Mary Lilly married Edmund Chisman. John Lilly and Mary had a son named John Lilly, the orphan, this is in records at York County that states that Edmund Chisman was stepfather to John Lilly, orphan."
