"The McCroskey Families, along with other well-recognized families, helped to pave the way for the early settlements in Washington, Jefferson, Sevier, Blount, and Monroe Counties. The McCroskey, Montgomery, McCray, Nodding, Grant, Gallaher, Cunningham, Houston, Barrett, Mayo, Eagleton, Gilbreath, and Hope families make up a modern day “Who’s Who in History.” A McCroskey Family Tree shows family connections to all of these families mentioned as well as others that we read about in TN History. These families had close ties to the Presbyterian Church and played an important part in its organization in America.They served their country well with many taking part in a number of military campaigns.
John Blair McCroskey served in the Revolutinary War, fought at King’s Mountain and in several Indian skirmishes (Pension # S2781). His wife was Ann Montgomery. Two of his sons, John McCroskey and Samuel McCroskey settled in Fork Creek Valley, east of Sweetwater, in Monroe Co., TN. John McCroskey was the first High Sheriff (1820 – 1830) in Monroe Co. and his brother, Samuel was the first Postmaster in Morganton and both held a number of political offices for many years. Their descendants became lawyers, educators, ministers, owners of various businesses, farmers, as well as serving in a number of political positions. Many of their descendants settled into other areas of TN as well as California and Washington State." (Text by Dede Harrill & Joy Locke)

From Forrest Brown’s write-up, which quotes various sources, Solon McCroskey’s father
died in 1848, when Solon was 18, leaving the estate in Solon’s charge. In 1849, Solon married
Nancy Jane Mayo (perhaps a sister to Drs. Will & Charles Mayo of Mayo Clinic). Solon continued
farming, taught a Sunday School class, and took a deep interest in church work. In 1858, at the age
of 28, he decided to become a minister. He had already attended Hiawassee College, and now with a
wife and five children removed to Ewing and Jefferson College in Sullivan County where he studied
for two years. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he began preaching, which he continued until his
death in 1910. Solon did not enter the army, as ministers were exempt from military service, but his
sympathies were with the Union cause. “He spent the time during those agonizing days administering
to the suffering, meanwhile being a circuit rider preaching the gospel in the surrounding area.”( This
is probably quoted from GOODSPEED HISTORY OF EAST TENNESSEE-by Joseph Sharp.) In
1869, Solon sold his father’s homestead and purchased the Duncan farm on Upper Fork Creek near
his uncle John’s place. He lived there 17 years, farming and preaching. His first wife, Nancy Jane
Mayo, died Nov. 27, 1874. He then, at a later date, married Sibley E. Eagleton, with whom he had
four children. He sold his little farm and moved to Madisonville, the county seat of Monroe County.
Forrest quotes H. E. McCroskey: “In 1882, two of his sons, John and Solon Alexander, had
moved to Washington State, soon to be followed by Samuel and Ewing. Then, influenced by their
success and encouragement, Solon removed his remaining family from Madisonville to Garfield,
Washington, in 1892. He was pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church there for 17 years,
until his death, March 25, 1910. He was one of the most beloved pastors and benefactors of his
time. This, together with the character and devotion of his two wives, being handed down to their
dutiful and grateful posterity. (The nearest we were ever to Heaven was when, after our father’s
death, as a teen-ager we temporarily lived with him...a very great soul!). He is buried in the family
plot in Garfield cemetery...but he lives in our hearts.”

Solon McCroskey, Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, 1830 - 1910:
Rev. Solon McCroskey, a well known and popular preacher of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a resident of the Third Civil District of Monroe County, is a native of that county, born January 11, 1830, a son of Samuel and Sarah (Tucker) McCroskey, both natives of Tennessee and of Scotch-Irish and German descent, respectively. The father was a native of Sevier County, born July 24, 1782, and died in Monroe County, September 28, 1848. The mother was born in Jefferson County, November 1, 1808, and died in Monroe County, August 8, 1841. They were married in Monroe County, July 1, 1828, and spent all their married life on Fork Creek Valley, in that county. The father was a farmer, a Democrat in politics, and a prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For twenty years before his death he was an elder in that church. The mother was a member of the same, and a truly pious woman. The father was married three times: First, to Miss Mary McCollum, of Blount County, Tenn., November 12, 1816. She died December 26, 1817, leaving a daughter. July 4, 1822, he married Miss Elizabeth C. Grant, of Monroe County. She died August 23, 1824, leaving two children, a son and a daughter; the son died while still quite young. The third marriage was with our subject's mother, and of their family of six children, our subject is the eldest. He received a fair education in his youth, and attended Hiwassee College before his marriage. At about the age of twelve he embraced religion, but never entered the ministry until thirty-one years of age. He had thought of nothing but farming up to the time he was twenty-nine years of age, when he became convinced that he was called upon to preach the Gospel. He determined to secure a better education, and in the early part of 1860 he, with his wife and five children, moved to Ewing and Jefferson College, Blount County, where he attended school about two years. He then returned to Monroe County, settled on his farm, and since that time has administered to the spiritual wants of his fellow-men, being constantly in the work for the last fifteen years, and has served congregations in Monroe, Blount, and McMinn Counties. The following are some of the important charges he has served as pastor: The Madisonville congregation for the last twelve or fifteen years of his twenty-two years of ministry; Rockville, Monroe Co., since 1869, except one year. He organized Rockville Church, and at the same time gave half of his time to the Sweetwater congregation for three years. About ten years ago he organized a church in Blount County, near Maryville, and has been a preacher for this congregation ever since, except three years. He is now pastor of the following churches: Madisonville, Rockville, Monroe County, Holston Church, Blount County, and Springfield, also in Blount County. Our subject has been married twice, the first time, October 24, 1849, to Miss Nancy J. Mayo, daughter of the late Rev. B. H. Mayo, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was born in Monroe County, July 17, 1828, and died in the same county, November 27, 1874. November 16, 1875, Mr. McCroskey married Miss Sibby E. Eagleton, of Blount County, Tenn., born June 7, 1841. He became the father of eight children by his first marriage, three of whom are dead, and four by his second marriage, one son being deceased. His first wife was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and his second wife is a member of the same church. Our subject is independent in politics, is a strong Prohibitionist, and is working for the party. He has a son, John A. McCroskey, in Greene County, Mo., who is also laboring in the ministry.

These families had close ties to the Presbyterian Church and played an important part in its organization in America.They served their country well with many taking part in a number of military campaigns.
John Blair McCroskey served in the Revolutinary War, fought at King’s Mountain and in several Indian skirmishes (Pension # S2781). His wife was Ann Montgomery. Two of his sons, John McCroskey and Samuel McCroskey settled in Fork Creek Valley, east of Sweetwater, in Monroe Co., TN. John McCroskey was the first High Sheriff (1820 – 1830) in Monroe Co. and his brother, Samuel was the first Postmaster in Morganton and both held a number of political offices for many years. Their descendants became lawyers, educators, ministers, owners of various businesses, farmers, as well as serving in a number of political positions. From Forrest Brown’s write-up, which quotes various sources, Solon McCroskey’s father
died in 1848, when Solon was 18, leaving the estate in Solon’s charge. In 1849, Solon married
Nancy Jane Mayo (perhaps a sister to Drs. Will & Charles Mayo of Mayo Clinic). Solon continued
farming, taught a Sunday School class, and took a deep interest in church work. In 1858, at the age
of 28, he decided to become a minister. He had already attended Hiawassee College, and now with a
wife and five children removed to Ewing and Jefferson College in Sullivan County where he studied
for two years. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he began preaching, which he continued until his
death in 1910. Solon did not enter the army, as ministers were exempt from military service, but his
sympathies were with the Union cause. “He spent the time during those agonizing days administering
to the suffering, meanwhile being a circuit rider preaching the gospel in the surrounding area.”( This
is probably quoted from GOODSPEED HISTORY OF EAST TENNESSEE-by Joseph Sharp.) In
1869, Solon sold his father’s homestead and purchased the Duncan farm on Upper Fork Creek near
his uncle John’s place. He lived there 17 years, farming and preaching. His first wife, Nancy Jane
Mayo, died Nov. 27, 1874. He then, at a later date, married Sibley E. Eagleton, with whom he had
four children. He sold his little farm and moved to Madisonville, the county seat of Monroe County.
Forrest quotes H. E. McCroskey: “In 1882, two of his sons, John and Solon Alexander, had
moved to Washington State, soon to be followed by Samuel and Ewing. Then, influenced by their
success and encouragement, Solon removed his remaining family from Madisonville to Garfield,
Washington, in 1892. He was pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church there for 17 years,
until his death, March 25, 1910. He was one of the most beloved pastors and benefactors of his
time. This, together with the character and devotion of his two wives, being handed down to their
dutiful and grateful posterity. (The nearest we were ever to Heaven was when, after our father’s
death, as a teen-ager we temporarily lived with him...a very great soul!). He is buried in the family
plot in Garfield cemetery...but he lives in our hearts.”

Solon McCroskey, Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, 1830 - 1910:
Rev. Solon McCroskey, a well known and popular preacher of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a resident of the Third Civil District of Monroe County, is a native of that county, born January 11, 1830, a son of Samuel and Sarah (Tucker) McCroskey, both natives of Tennessee and of Scotch-Irish and German descent, respectively. The father was a native of Sevier County, born July 24, 1782, and died in Monroe County, September 28, 1848. The mother was born in Jefferson County, November 1, 1808, and died in Monroe County, August 8, 1841. They were married in Monroe County, July 1, 1828, and spent all their married life on Fork Creek Valley, in that county. The father was a farmer, a Democrat in politics, and a prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For twenty years before his death he was an elder in that church. The mother was a member of the same, and a truly pious woman. The father was married three times: First, to Miss Mary McCollum, of Blount County, Tenn., November 12, 1816. She died December 26, 1817, leaving a daughter. July 4, 1822, he married Miss Elizabeth C. Grant, of Monroe County. She died August 23, 1824, leaving two children, a son and a daughter; the son died while still quite young. The third marriage was with our subject's mother, and of their family of six children, our subject is the eldest. He received a fair education in his youth, and attended Hiwassee College before his marriage. At about the age of twelve he embraced religion, but never entered the ministry until thirty-one years of age. He had thought of nothing but farming up to the time he was twenty-nine years of age, when he became convinced that he was called upon to preach the Gospel. He determined to secure a better education, and in the early part of 1860 he, with his wife and five children, moved to Ewing and Jefferson College, Blount County, where he attended school about two years. He then returned to Monroe County, settled on his farm, and since that time has administered to the spiritual wants of his fellow-men, being constantly in the work for the last fifteen years, and has served congregations in Monroe, Blount, and McMinn Counties. From Forrest Brown’s write-up, which quotes various sources, Solon McCroskey’s father
died in 1848, when Solon was 18, leaving the estate in Solon’s charge. In 1849, Solon married
Nancy Jane Mayo (perhaps a sister to Drs. Will & Charles Mayo of Mayo Clinic). Solon continued
farming, taught a Sunday School class, and took a deep interest in church work. In 1858, at the age
of 28, he decided to become a minister. He had already attended Hiawassee College, and now with a
wife and five children removed to Ewing and Jefferson College in Sullivan County where he studied
for two years. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he began preaching, which he continued until his
death in 1910. Solon did not enter the army, as ministers were exempt from military service, but his
sympathies were with the Union cause. “He spent the time during those agonizing days administering
to the suffering, meanwhile being a circuit rider preaching the gospel in the surrounding area.”( This
is probably quoted from GOODSPEED HISTORY OF EAST TENNESSEE-by Joseph Sharp.) In
1869, Solon sold his father’s homestead and purchased the Duncan farm on Upper Fork Creek near
his uncle John’s place. He lived there 17 years, farming and preaching. His first wife, Nancy Jane
Mayo, died Nov. 27, 1874. He then, at a later date, married Sibley E. Eagleton, with whom he had
four children. He sold his little farm and moved to Madisonville, the county seat of Monroe County.
Forrest quotes H. E. McCroskey: “In 1882, two of his sons, John and Solon Alexander, had
moved to Washington State, soon to be followed by Samuel and Ewing. Then, influenced by their
success and encouragement, Solon removed his remaining family from Madisonville to Garfield,
Washington, in 1892. He was pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church there for 17 years,
until his death, March 25, 1910. He was one of the most beloved pastors and benefactors of his
time. This, together with the character and devotion of his two wives, being handed down to their
dutiful and grateful posterity. (The nearest we were ever to Heaven was when, after our father’s
death, as a teen-ager we temporarily lived with him...a very great soul!). He is buried in the family
plot in Garfield cemetery...but he lives in our hearts.”

Solon McCroskey, Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, 1830 - 1910:
Rev. Solon McCroskey, a well known and popular preacher of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a resident of the Third Civil District of Monroe County, is a native of that county, born January 11, 1830, a son of Samuel and Sarah (Tucker) McCroskey, both natives of Tennessee and of Scotch-Irish and German descent, respectively. The father was a native of Sevier County, born July 24, 1782, and died in Monroe County, September 28, 1848. The mother was born in Jefferson County, November 1, 1808, and died in Monroe County, August 8, 1841. They were married in Monroe County, July 1, 1828, and spent all their married life on Fork Creek Valley, in that county. The father was a farmer, a Democrat in politics, and a prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For twenty years before his death he was an elder in that church. The mother was a member of the same, and a truly pious woman. The father was married three times: First, to Miss Mary McCollum, of Blount County, Tenn., November 12, 1816. She died December 26, 1817, leaving a daughter. July 4, 1822, he married Miss Elizabeth C. Grant, of Monroe County. She died August 23, 1824, leaving two children, a son and a daughter; the son died while still quite young. The third marriage was with our subject's mother, and of their family of six children, our subject is the eldest. He received a fair education in his youth, and attended Hiwassee College before his marriage. At about the age of twelve he embraced religion, but never entered the ministry until thirty-one years of age. He had thought of nothing but farming up to the time he was twenty-nine years of age, when he became convinced that he was called upon to preach the Gospel. He determined to secure a better education, and in the early part of 1860 he, with his wife and five children, moved to Ewing and Jefferson College, Blount County, where he attended school about two years. He then returned to Monroe County, settled on his farm, and since that time has administered to the spiritual wants of his fellow-men, being constantly in the work for the last fifteen years, and has served congregations in Monroe, Blount, and McMinn Counties. The following are some of the important charges he has served as pastor: The Madisonville congregation for the last twelve or fifteen years of his twenty-two years of ministry; Rockville, Monroe Co., since 1869, except one year. He organized Rockville Church, and at the same time gave half of his time to the Sweetwater congregation for three years. About ten years ago he organized a church in Blount County, near Maryville, and has been a preacher for this congregation ever since, except three years. He is now pastor of the following churches: Madisonville, Rockville, Monroe County, Holston Church, Blount County, and Springfield, also in Blount County. Our subject has been married twice, the first time, October 24, 1849, to Miss Nancy J. Mayo, daughter of the late Rev. B. H. Mayo, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was born in Monroe County, July 17, 1828, and died in the same county, November 27, 1874. November 16, 1875, Mr. McCroskey married Miss Sibby E. Eagleton, of Blount County, Tenn., born June 7, 1841. He became the father of eight children by his first marriage, three of whom are dead, and four by his second marriage, one son being deceased. His first wife was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and his second wife is a member of the same church. Our subject is independent in politics, is a strong Prohibitionist, and is working for the party. He has a son, John A. McCroskey, in Greene County, Mo., who is also laboring in the ministry.

"The McCroskey Families, along with other well-recognized families, helped to pave the way for the early settlements in Washington, Jefferson, Sevier, Blount, and Monroe Counties. The McCroskey, Montgomery, McCray, Nodding, Grant, Gallaher, Cunningham, Houston, Barrett, Mayo, Eagleton, Gilbreath, and Hope families make up a modern day “Who’s Who in History.” A McCroskey Family Tree shows family connections to all of these families mentioned as well as others that we read about in TN History. These families had close ties to the Presbyterian Church and played an important part in its organization in America.They served their country well with many taking part in a number of military campaigns.
John Blair McCroskey served in the Revolutinary War, fought at King’s Mountain and in several Indian skirmishes (Pension # S2781). His wife was Ann Montgomery. Two of his sons, John McCroskey and Samuel McCroskey settled in Fork Creek Valley, east of Sweetwater, in Monroe Co., TN. John McCroskey was the first High Sheriff (1820 – 1830) in Monroe Co. and his brother, Samuel was the first Postmaster in Morganton and both held a number of political offices for many years. Their descendants became lawyers, educators, ministers, owners of various businesses, farmers, as well as serving in a number of political positions.
