"The McCroskey Families, along with other well-recognized families, helped to pave the way for the early settlements in Washington, Jefferson, Sevier, Blount, and Monroe Counties. The McCroskey, Montgomery, McCray, Nodding, Grant, Gallaher, Cunningham, Houston, Barrett, Mayo, Eagleton, Gilbreath, and Hope families make up a modern day “Who’s Who in History.” A McCroskey Family Tree shows family connections to all of these families mentioned as well as others that we read about in TN History. These families had close ties to the Presbyterian Church and played an important part in its organization in America. They served their country well with many taking part in a number of military campaigns.
John Blair McCroskey served in the Revolutinary War, fought at King’s Mountain and in several Indian skirmishes (Pension # S2781). His wife was Ann Montgomery. Two of his sons, John McCroskey and Samuel McCroskey settled in Fork Creek Valley, east of Sweetwater, in Monroe Co., TN. John McCroskey was the first High Sheriff (1820 – 1830) in Monroe Co. and his brother, Samuel was the first Postmaster in Morganton and both held a number of political offices for many years. Their descendants became lawyers, educators, ministers, owners of various businesses, farmers, as well as serving in a number of political positions. Many of their descendants settled into other areas of TN as well as California and Washington State." (Text by Dede Harrill & Joy Locke)

Solon McCroskey, Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, 1830 - 1910:
Rev. Solon McCroskey, a well known and popular preacher of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a resident of the Third Civil District of Monroe County, is a native of that county, born January 11, 1830, a son of Samuel and Sarah (Tucker) McCroskey, both natives of Tennessee and of Scotch-Irish and German descent, respectively. The father was a native of Sevier County, born July 24, 1782, and died in Monroe County, September 28, 1848. The mother was born in Jefferson County, November 1, 1808, and died in Monroe County, August 8, 1841. They were married in Monroe County, July 1, 1828, and spent all their married life on Fork Creek Valley, in that county. The father was a farmer, a Democrat in politics, and a prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. For twenty years before his death he was an elder in that church. The mother was a member of the same, and a truly pious woman. The father was married three times: First, to Miss Mary McCollum, of Blount County, Tenn., November 12, 1816. She died December 26, 1817, leaving a daughter. July 4, 1822, he married Miss Elizabeth C. Grant, of Monroe County. She died August 23, 1824, leaving two children, a son and a daughter; the son died while still quite young. The third marriage was with our subject's mother, and of their family of six children, our subject is the eldest. He received a fair education in his youth, and attended Hiwassee College before his marriage. At about the age of twelve he embraced religion, but never entered the ministry until thirty-one years of age. He had thought of nothing but farming up to the time he was twenty-nine years of age, when he became convinced that he was called upon to preach the Gospel. He determined to secure a better education, and in the early part of 1860 he, with his wife and five children, moved to Ewing and Jefferson College, Blount County, where he attended school about two years. He then returned to Monroe County, settled on his farm, and since that time has administered to the spiritual wants of his fellow-men, being constantly in the work for the last fifteen years, and has served congregations in Monroe, Blount, and McMinn Counties. The following are some of the important charges he has served as pastor: The Madisonville congregation for the last twelve or fifteen years of his twenty-two years of ministry; Rockville, Monroe Co., since 1869, except one year. He organized Rockville Church, and at the same time gave half of his time to the Sweetwater congregation for three years. About ten years ago he organized a church in Blount County, near Maryville, and has been a preacher for this congregation ever since, except three years. He is now pastor of the following churches: Madisonville, Rockville, Monroe County, Holston Church, Blount County, and Springfield, also in Blount County. Our subject has been married twice, the first time, October 24, 1849, to Miss Nancy J. Mayo, daughter of the late Rev. B. H. Mayo, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was born in Monroe County, July 17, 1828, and died in the same county, November 27, 1874. November 16, 1875, Mr. McCroskey married Miss Sibby E. Eagleton, of Blount County, Tenn., born June 7, 1841. He became the father of eight children by his first marriage, three of whom are dead, and four by his second marriage, one son being deceased. His first wife was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and his second wife is a member of the same church. Our subject is independent in politics, is a strong Prohibitionist, and is working for the party. He has a son, John A. McCroskey, in Greene County, Mo., who is also laboring in the ministry.

Don Coatney:
[As of Feb. 15, 2003): "Last information I have on him is he was in a battle May 9-10, 1864 I believe at Swift Creek (state of Virginia). Per a letter from one of his comrades named Albert Meranda, he was either wounded and left in the field or he was captured by the Rebel Army and taken prisoner. Nashville did not return home after the war. The packet of information I received from the National Archives offered no clues as to his demise.
Nashville Coatney, (Cortnay) and Albert Meranda (Miranda) were in "D" Co 13th Indiana Infantry both enlisted on 6/19/1861 as Privates both enlisted in Jefferson Co IN.
The 13th Infantry was at Chester Station VA on 5/10/64. There were 8 killed, 7 wounded, 19 captured by the Rebel Army, and 1 missing
at Chester Station, Virginia. Nashville Cortnay was not listed among them."

"Swift Creek
Arrowfield Church
Civil War in Virginia
American Civil War
May 9, 1864
On May 9, Major General Benjamin Butler made a thrust toward Petersburg and was met by Bushrod Johnson's Division at Swift Creek.
A premature Confederate attack at Arrowfield Church was driven back with heavy losses, but Union forces did not follow up. After skirmishing, Butler seemed content to tear up the railroad tracks and did not press the defenders.
In conjunction with the advance to Swift Creek, five Federal gunboats steamed up the Appomattox River to bombard Fort Clifton, while Hincks's U.S. Colored Troops infantry division struggled through marshy ground from the land side.
The gunboats were quickly driven off, and the infantry attack was abandoned.

Transcription of Obituaries:
Both of the following obituaries are probably from Morocco (IN) Courier:
Benjamin Franklin Coatney
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist
Church for Benjamin Coatney, well-known Morocco resident who passed away at
his home here Tuesday.
Benjamin Franklin Coatney, son of Archibald and Katherine Coatney, was born
in Jefferson County, Indiana, November 10, 1851, and passed away August 4,
1931, at his home in Morocco, being 79 years, 8 months, and 15 days old. He
was the last one of a family of 17 brothers and sisters, 13 of them being
half brothers and sisters. On September 5, 1872 he was married to Martha Ann
Burnsides. To this union twelve children were born: Mrs. Wm. Bannister of
Kingman, Henry Nashville, of Winterhaven, Florida, Freeman Ellsworth of
Morocco, Wm. Franklin of Donovan, Ill., Branic Herman of Kentland, Amanda
Melvina of Frankfort, Mrs. Joe Jones, Brook, Mrs. Frank Cox, Hebron,
Benjamin Harrison, Hammond, Mrs. John Wiltfang, Morocco, Mrs. Jess Plott,
deceased, and John Wesley who died in infancy.
In 1883 he united with the Methodist Church at Kentland, and lived a good,
faithful member to the last. In 1891 he moved to Warren County, Indiana. In
1907 he moved to Newton County and spent the rest of his days in and near
Morocco. He was afflicted for the past two years in which he bore his
sufferings with patience. When the children were home he often wanted them
to sing with him. He was a loving father and a good neighbor and will be
missed by all, but our loss is his gain.
Mr. Coatney had the distinction of living to enjoy the fifth generation,
having one great-great-grandchild, 19 great-grandchildren and 32
grandchildren.
Rev. Roush officiated at the services. The remains were interred here.
MARTHA ANN COATNEY
Martha Ann Coatney was born September 29, 1855, in Jennings County and
passed away at her home November, 1940.
Mrs. Coatney was the daughter of James and Martha Burnsides. Of this family
only a brother, John Burnsides, of Scottsburg survives.
Mrs. Coatney was married to Benjamin F. Coatney September 5, 1872. To this
union twelve children were born. Two children preceded the mother in death.
Those living are Mrs. Louisa Bannister of Kingman, Mrs. Amanda Krammes of
Sedalia, Mrs Martha Jones of Brook, Mrs. Mahala Cox (Fox?)
of North Judson, Mrs. Nora Wiltfang of Morocco, Freeman E. Coatney and
William F. Coatney, both of Morocco, Branic H. Coatney of Kingman, Benjamin
Coatney of Mt. Ayr, and Henry N. Coatney.
Besides the immediate family there are 29 grandchildren, 30 great
grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Don Coatney: "My father Albert Edison Coatney was born in 1902 and in his writing has referred to William J. Johnson as "Buffalo Bill" Johnson. In 1888 William J. Johnson along with his wife Mary Eveline Townsend Morgan Johnson and my Grandfather Benjamin Harrison Coatney with his wife Hattie Magnolia Morgan and their two young sons moved from Indiana to Arkansas living in Perla, Malvern, Hot Springs and possibly other areas. Soon a couple of my Grandfather's brothers, Charles Edward Coatney and George Combe Coatney, joined them there. They stayed until 1895 (leaving in somewhat of a hurry as Benjamin had heard the rumor that the constable was after him for committing the crime of taking pictures for profit on a Sunday). They moved to Indianapolis, but I am not sure if the Johnson's came with them."

Obituary of Hattie M. Coatney
Hattie Magnolia Coatney was born on a farm near Scottsburg, Indiana. She was the daughter of William Morgan and his wife, the former Mary Townsend. At the age of two she lost her father to sickness due to his service in the Civil War. A few years later the family moved to Boone County, and then to Indianapolis. Later they returned to Scott County where, at the age of 18, Hattie was married to Benjamin Coatney, of Scott County. After her two oldest children were born, Mrs. Coatney and her husband moved to Arkansas, staying there seven years. In 1895 they moved to Indianapolis where the two youngest children were born. Mrs. Coatney spent the rest of her life in Indianapolis. She died at her home April 28, 1937, lacking one day of being 71 years old.
Mrs. Coatney was a great lover of flowers. During the later years of her life she was nearly always to be seen in her garden except in the winter. One year she was awarded a prize in a competition for beautiful yards.
Mrs. Coatney is survived by a half brother, George Johnson, of Indianapolis and her oldest and youngest children, William and Albert. Her two other sons, Charles and George died some years ago.
