Article written by BOB CARTER:
Ira H Alderman
Birth: Mar. 1, 1836
Death: May 22, 1915

The following article was written by BOB CARTER:
Ira H. Alderman, resided in Alamance County, North Carolina; enlisted at Forsyth County, North Carolina, October 1, 1862, aged 26, as private, company F, 28th Regiment North Carolina Troops; wounded at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; transferred to the Confederate States Navy, April 3, 1864; served as landsman on the CSS Virginia II, James River squadron, Virginia, 1864-1865. [NCT 8, 175; ORN 2, 1, 311.]

CSS Virginia II was a Confederate Navy steam-powered ironclad ram laid down in 1862 at the William Graves' shipyard in Richmond, Virginia. Acting Constructor William A. Graves, CSN, was the superintendent in charge of her building. In order to conserve scarce iron plating, he ordered the ship's armored casemate shortened from the specifications given in John L. Porter's original building plans; in addition, the ship's iron-plating, while six inches thick on the casemate's forward face, was reduced to five inches on her port, starboard, and aft faces.

The Virginia II was named after the more famous Confederate ironclad, the CSS Virginia, also referred to as the Merrimack because of its origins. In fact, the original Virginia's success caused "gunboat associations" to emerge around the South, mainly driven by women, and their efforts helped with the construction of the Virginia II

Construction

Money to help with the construction of this ironclad was largely contributed by the Richmond chapter of the "Ladies Aid and Defense Society" called the "National Defense Association" which adopted this ironclad in early April 1862 for the defense of Richmond. The chairman was Maria Gaitskell Clopton. It is estimated that the society contributed more than $30,000 towards its construction.[2]

By November 1862, John Mercer Brooke was able to report that she was "pretty well advanced, frames up, clamps in, etc... She will be a strong and fine vessel."

However, after this promising start, significant delays plagued the new ironclad. It was not until more than a year after she was laid down that the Virginia II was finally launched without incident on June 29, 1863. "She glided into the water 'like a thing of life' amid the prolonged cheers of the spectators."[3] However, she suffered from further delays in being fitted out and was not fully commissioned until May 18, 1864, almost a year later, and was made the flagship of the James River Squadron (replacing CSS Richmond in this role).
[edit] Career

Virginia II, Commander Robert B. Pegram, CSN, went into action on 21 June 1864 as flagship of Commodore John K. Mitchell, CSN, during the engagement between the Confederate James River Squadron and Federal ships in Trent's Reach, however she suffered from mechanical trouble and problems with her propeller when the chain of the CSS Richmond got caught up in it and so could not participate in this battle.

On August 13, the Virginia II participated in the attack on the Union forces at Dutch Gap. The USS Maugus and her gunboats joined in the battle but could not effectively train her guns, though they did manage to get two shots that hit Virginia II. On August 17, she participated in the capture of Signal Hill, shelling the Union defenses from 3 PM until 9 PM.

From September 29 through October 1, the Virginia II and the rest of the squadron attacked New Market Heights and Fort Harrison in conjunction with the Confederate Army in what was the largest operation north of the James River since Cold Harbor, and would remain so until the end of the war. Once again, though, the Virginia II suffered some difficulty which delayed her entrance into the battle. She had just received a new gun and in the rush to leave the dock, got the supply ship Gallego caught in her anchor chain, causing the Gallego to sink.

In their routine patrol of the James River, the squadron was surprised on the morning of October 22 to discover that the Union Army had finished fortifying Cox Hill. To cover the retreat of the wooden vessels of the fleet, the Virginia II approached the battery, followed by the other two ironclads, and effected the retreat upstream to Chaffin's Bluff. During this, the Virginia II's smokestack was riddled by shells. Though they were caught by surprise, this small action helped determine the effectiveness of the ironclads' casemates against close rifled fire, and in the case of the Virginia II the results were favorable: her armor withstood 7 hits by 100-pound conical bolts, which barely dented its surface.[9]

On December 7, the Virginia II, along with the Fredericksburg and Richmond, came down to Fort Brady near Trent's Reach, and exchanged fire with the fort near sunset until darkness approached.
[edit] Battle of Trent's Reach

Her final action took place on January 23-January 24, 1865 when the Confederate squadron in the James River, including ironclads Virginia II, CSS Richmond and CSS Fredericksburg, with five smaller vessels, made a second unsuccessful attempt to circumvent obstructions in Trent's Reach. A reliable report indicated that there was a passage through, as a result of a freshet of melting ice. To avoid the risk of collision, the gunboats and tenders were lashed to the starboard sides of the ironclads - Virginia accreted the gunboats Nansemond and Torpedo, with the torpedo boat Scorpion in tow, to her bulk. After passing the Union batteries at Fort Brady sometime after 8 PM, the Virginia II accidentally beached the Torpedo by cutting too close to the shore. The captain of the Nansemond, untied his ship from Virginia II in an attempt to free the Torpedo. The fleet continued on and reached the obstructions at Trent's Reach.[12][13]

Again Virginia II ran into trouble, this time running aground and the smaller ships tried to free her for three hours. Only two ships made it through, the rest were either running aground or helping the ones who had. Dawn came with most of the squadron in full view of the Union fortifications at Battery Parsons, and they had to suffer the fire until the water was able to rise high enough to allow them to retreat. Just as the water rose high enough to float the Virginia II in late morning, the Union fleet arrived and added to the fire, this time more deadly, as the double-turretted monitor USS Onondaga was able to pierce her armor. She and the rest of the squadron retreated upstream until they were out of the way and under cover of the Confederate batteries at Battery Dantzler. They attempted to try again that night, but the Union soldiers had erected a huge light illuminating the obstructions, and combined with several other factors, decided to abandon the attempt.

When leaving, the Hampton managed to catch her propeller in Virginia II's anchor chain. They suffered more fire on their return upriver from Fort Brady and Virginia II ran aground again before making it to the safety of Chaffin's Bluff. Virginia II had at least 6 killed and more than a half dozen wounded from the action, and also suffered damage which required extensive repairs.[14] Her smokestack was destroyed, her engines were faulty and the iron shielding and wooden framework were damaged.[12] Her repairs had just been finished, when the Virginia II was one of the ships destroyed in the James River before the evacuation of Richmond on 3 April 1865.

All the other trees that I've seen of this family put George Hartzell marrying James Toney's sister SUSANNAH TONEY (born 1762). This tree puts George Hartzell marrying James Toney's daughter SUSANNAH TONEY (born1792), which makes more sense time wise."]

The information below is very intriguing; if you actually go to the website, you can get a better picture of the tree than my copying allowed:

[Donna Forney Clark: "Essentially the line below in question is running William Toney/ James Toney/ SUSANNAH TONEY (born 1792) marries George Hartzell)/ Catherine Hartzell. All the other trees that I've seen of this family put George Hartzell marrying James Toney's sister SUSANNAH TONEY (born 1762). This tree puts George Hartzell marrying James Toney's daughter SUSANNAH TONEY (born1792), which makes more sense time wise."]

Notes for NICHOLAS SKEELS:
Nicholas Skeels - born in Maryland about 1783 (1850 Census, Tuscarawas., Co., Ohio)
His first Wife was Rebecca Scribner of Maryland. She died before 1808 leaving Nicholas with one daughter, Rebecca.
He married Elizabeth Harding in Frederick County, MD July 19, 1808. (Marriage Record)
His family resided in Ann Arundel Co., MD in 1810 (1810 Census)
The family moved with some of Herrons family plus brothers Isaac and William to Jeff Co., Ohio in 1812
Nicholas was a soldier in the War of 1812.
In 1824 land records show a Nicholas Skeels purchasing land in Jefferson Co., and Carroll Co.
Index for 1830 census shows a Nicholas Skeels residing in Warren Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
In 1835 Nicholas successfully sued the widow and children of John Crough of Tuscarawas Co., (Bill of complaint in favor of Nicholas Skeels)
In 1843 Nicholas married Julia Wright who had two children. I assume that Elizabeth had probably died by then (Marriage Records]
In 1845 a daughter, Julia Ann Skeels, was born to Nicholas and Julia (1850 Census)
In 1850 Nicholas was living in Tuscarawas Co., with his wife, two step - children, and one daughter
We are not sure what happened to Nicholas from here.

It is possible his father William Skeels might have been born in England. It is possible that there is an earlier William who was born in England and had a son named William born in the Colonies - this is really still up in the air.

Lois,
I just came back from looking at the record book and the information is very limited but may answer some of your questions. Since you have the basic information from the census and your uncle and father are both deceased, I will just tell you everything we have about them and their time at Cunningham.
Eustace Thomas, born 9/11/1911 and Donald Thomas, born March 28, 1914 were placed at Cunningham on September 26, 1919 by their father, Earl Thomas of Lincoln, Illinois. The notes as to why the children were placed at Cunningham say " death of own mother, deserted by step mother" -- these notes are hard to read but that's what I think it says. Under mother's name it says Jessie Thomas. The boys were both discharged to their father on July 7, 1923.

MARION E. THOMAS
Sept. 11, 1911 - Apr. 27, 1988
Marion E. Thomas, was called Estuace while living in Illinois or Marion. When he moved to the west coast they called him Tom. [TEXT OMITTED]
Tom lived in Indian Creek, Menard County, Illinois with Joseph W. and Della Dawson. He thought of them fondly through the years and told many stories of living with them. They had daughters Dorothy and Lois. Lois thought I was named after her, but I was actually named after Lois, wife of Fred Burnett of Springfield, Illinois.
Tom worked as a farm hand in his early years and later became a top notch machinist.
Tom and Mary moved to CA. where Tom worked at "The Examiner" and later at National Supply during the war.
They became good friends of Frenchie and Bobbie LaVitte and lived in their trailor court in Gardena, CA.
After the death of Mary, Tom left me, his daughter Lois Earline Thomas, with the LaVitte family while he worked. Later that year in the dead of winter Dad and I moved to Oregon, settling in the Forest Grove area. We stayed for a while with Aunt Jessie and later with Uncle Johnnie's folks, the Speakes.
Dad married Jennie Viola (Morton) Barkley, widow of Ralph Wallace Barkley, who had 3 children: Darlene Lou, Ralph George, and Roderick Keith.
Vi died 1 Jan 1961 in a car accident just outside Vernonia, Columbia Co. OR.
near where they owned a farm.
After Vi's death, Dad moved to Eugene, Lane Co. Or. where he bought an apartment complex at 585 E. 19th. He later sold the complex and bought a home at 1655 Norkenzie Road in Eugene and lived with Carol Barnett (no marriage).
Dad left Eugene and moved to Portland, Or. where he lived with me till his death from lung cancer and heart failure.
His favorite hobby was standing on the river bank catching fish. He and I spent many hours enjoying the great outdoors and each other on the McKenzie River and Dorena Lake.
Dad passed away the morning of 27 April 1988 at the Portland Adventist Hospital
with me at his side.
He was the biggest influence in my life and I surely do miss him....Notes by Lois E. Thomas 1999, Portland, Or.

Mary Virginia Schwartz & Harvey Lee Douglas were married August 21, 1929 at Taylorville, Ills. by Rev. Robert E. Henry, Pastor of the Christian Church.
She was raised believing her name was Mary Virginia (her Father didn't like her real name which was Evelyn Mary He wanted her called Mary Evelyn, so her Mother called her Mary Virginia....Virginia came from her Mother's side of the family.) She found out she was born Evelyn Mary Schwartz, when she sent for her birth certificate in 1946 and from then on used the name Mary Evelyn.
She graduated from Taylorville Primary School, Taylorville, IL. in 1925. She went on to graduate from Pawnee High School, Springfield, IL in 1929.
She played the piano by ear and loved to dance.
Everyone who knew her thought she was the nicest and kindest person they had ever known and had a great sense of humor.
During WWII, she would wrap food and clothing in newspaper and place it in a special can outside for the children of the neighborhood. This way the children maintained their dignity and didn't have to beg.
Mary had dark brown eyes, dark brown hair and olive skin as does her greatgrandaughter,[TEXT OMITTED].....Lois E. Thomas

OBIT - "Rolla Herald" - Phelps Co. MO
Mr. Harrison Williams, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Phelps County, died at his home in the Dean District, eight miles Southeast of Rolla at midnight Monday night, Feb. 17, 1930. Although Mr. Williams had been reported in a serious condition, the news of his death brought pain and sorrow to the hearts of many friends. He is among the last of those sturdy citizens who have always stood for what was right, who helped to mould and build our county on a firm and solid foundation. To the Editor of the Herald, it is a personal loss, for thirty-five years they have been warm friends.
Harrison Williams was born at Easley, Pickens County, South Carolina, April 3rd, 1848. Following the Civil War, in 1870, he and his brother, the late Judge Josiah Williams, came to Phelps County and made their home. Had he lived until the coming April he would have been 82 years old. On January 16, 1873, Mr. Williams was united in marriage with Miss Mary Dean of the Dean District in this county. To this union ten children were born. Two of them, Mrs. Geo. Gahr and Mrs. C.P. Saddler, preceded him in death. He is survived by his beloved wife and the following children: Mrs. M.C. Hale, Henry and John Williams, Mrs. M.G. Herberger, Mrs. Carl Schwartz, Mrs. H.A. Haas, Mrs. A.A. Bowlin and Mrs. H.E. Fue. All of them were at his bed side when he passed away. He is also survived by thirty-three grand children and eleven great grand children. Also nephews and nieces, sons and daughters of his brother, survive.
Mr. Williams devoted his life to farming and was most successful in this vocation. He was a high minded, honorable gentleman of the old school, who counted his honor his dearest possession and he lived up to it.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B.V. Bolton from the Rolla Baptist Church at two o;clock Wednesday afternoon and from there the remains were conveyed to the Masonic cemetery at St James, Mo. for interment.
Besides the relatives there were present a large concourse of friends to pay their last tribute of respect to a man who had been a credit to his county and his community.

Written by Lee Herberger:
Family tradition says the Williams family left South Carolina in 1870, after the end of the Civil War in a three wagon train pulled by mules, headed for Kansas. When they neared Rolla, Missouri, one of the mules died and they headed into Rolla with the wagon pulled by a cow. Along with Harrison was his sister Melinda (Williams) Pace, her husband Lum Pace, Harrison's brother Josiah and his wife, and two older black men. Family tradition says that the two black men did not like Missouri and after spending one winter there, returned to South Carolina in one of the wagons.
Following the war, Moses Dean, Blue John Dean, along with several other Dean family members left Phelps County and moved to Oklahoma Indian Territory by wagon.
Harrison moved the Moses Dean log cabin onto his property and set up a blacksmith shop. He was a skilled metal worker. Lee Herberger, a great grandson of Harrison recounts how Oran Lee Herberger, Sr grew up on the old home place and told of working the large bellows, forge and other tools along with his father Michael Herberger. The old cabin was torn down by Micheal Herberger as he was concerned about his grandchildren playing in it.
Harrison decided to settle in the Rolla area and built a log cabin near there. This land was bordered by the Big Dry Fork Creek. The house was later enlarged by adding a kitchen with an attic room above it and a bedroom over the original log house. The story of the house is related by Lee Herberger. These upstairs rooms did not connect. The original log room became the living room and was commonly refered to as the fireplace room because of the large stone fireplace there. Then a second home was built at ninety degrees to the first. A narrow area between the two houses was used as a summer dining room. This area was later closed in to become the front entrance way to the original house and the back part became a bedroom. This new bedroom connected to the kitchen. Although the two houses were then outwardly attached there was no inside doorway between them. The new house was built by Henry Stephen Williams, the son of Harrison. It was used primarily by city folks who traveled to the country to board there.
Harrison farmed his land and raised mules which were said to be the best in the country. According to the story by Lee Herberger, Harrison and Mary were often called upon by their neighbors to provide medical assistance such as to sew up deep cuts. One such emergency called for action during the night to build a casket from lumber removed from the barn according to their grandson, Oran Herberger.
The home that Harrison built was later lived in by his daughter, Anna Jane and her husband Michael Herberger. The house has since burnt down and rebuilt. The fire was caused by a chimney fire.

ROLLA, Mo., Oct. 6. -- "Dizzy" is still a winning, ain't he? I'm betting on the Cardinals!" Aunt Mary Williams, 80-year-old aunt of Dizzy and Paul Dean, smiled proudly, adjusted herself to a more comfortable position in the big old black walnut bed to which she has been confined for nearly two years, and turned closer to the radio to better follow the announcer's details of the second game of the world's series.
Hallahan was in the box, but this did not dim the interests of the Deans in the "Dean neighborhood" seven miles out in the Ozark hills from Rolla, where Dizzy and Paul's forefathers spent their lifetime, and where many of their immediate relatives still live. Their father, Albert Dean, was born there, and lived there until he was....(not readable)...migrated farther west from Tennessee.
The nineteenth century was still in swaddling clothes when old Uncle Moses Dean, the great-great- (part of article missing)...two world-famous yungsters are bringing just as much joy and pride and gladness into the Dean neighborhood as if they had been born there.
If there is such a thing as ingeriting a throwing arm Dizzy and Paul might well have had some leaning in that direction, for there is ample throwing material in the Dean neighborhood to gladden the heart of any 15-year-old boy. Stones of all sizes abound, and along the narrow old trail that leads from highway 72 into the neighborhood one frequently encounters great clusters of black walnuts strewn over the path, just right in their green skins at this time of year for young fingers to caress in a throwing grasp.
