Hardesty's Richland = Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia. [Richland County OH version] 1885...original available at the Ohio Historical Society. There is also a version of the soldier's biographies extracted from the above Hardesty's that has been published by the Richland County Genealogical Society, 1998 called Richland County, Ohio Civil War Veterans. This book states that Christopher Au was born 12 Dec 1824 to Henry and Ann Barbara Au in Cumberland county PA. He married Laura J. Greenfield 17 June 1847 at Fort Madison, Iowa. They had the following children: George W., Adessa Jane, John H., Mary E. Martha A., Sherman G., Abram H., Laura F., and Christopher S. Captain Au was living in Ontario, Richland county Ohio in 1885. He was postmaster and merchant.
1860 Census, Series: M653 Roll: 1028, Springfield Twp, Richland Co OH, page 91: Christopher AU, age 35 PA, farmer; Laura, age 30 NY; John, age 8 OH; Mary, age 6 OH; Martha, age 4 OH; Sherman, age 2 OH; Loreta NAZOR, age 16, domestic, no birthplace; Albert WILLISON, age 20 England, farm hand.

History of Richland County Ohio by A. A. Graham, Springfield Twp, 1880, page 893: AU, CHRISTOPHER; merchant, Ontario; he was born in Cumberland Co., Penn., in 1824, and came to Ohio in 1843. He was married June 27, 1848, to Laura J. Greenfield, who was born Nov. 16, 1829, in the State of New York ; they have the following family : John H., born May 2, 1852; Mary E., March 27, 1854; Martha A., April 8, 1856; Sherman G., July 10, 1858; Abraham Hamlin, Sept. 1, 1860; Laura F., Nov. 15, 1862; Christopher Sheriden, Oct. 25, 1865. Mr. Au resided in Mansfield for one year and a half; then spent six years in the Western States; returned to Mansfield and remained till 1855, then removed to Springfield Township, and engaged in farming till 1869, when he located in Ontario, and engaged in the mercantile business; he also has been Postmaster for eleven years. Mr. Au recruited a company for the 120th O. V. I., of which he was Captain, during the war. John H. Au was married, April 18, 1878, to Miss E. M. Hartupee; they have one daughter, Minnie L., born Feb. 8, 1879. He is now a partner in the mercantile business with his father.
1900 Census Springfield Township, Richland County OH: Christopher AU age 75, born Dec 1824 in PA , a farmer, married 51 yrs, parents born in PA; Laura S, age 70 born Nov 1829 in NY, married 51 yrs, 9 children 5 still living, parents born NY.
Death record in Ohio: Christopher AU died 16 Jan 1909 at Mansfield, Richland Co OH. Born about 1825. Age 84 yrs, 1 month, 4 dys. Father John Henry. Mother Barbara STOWE.
