Arnold Thompson:
"Bernard was wounded Sept. 2, 1943, on his fourth bombing mission after arriving in England. I was 11 years old at the time and this made a big impression on me. A piece of flack about the size of a marble (his crew chief retrieved it from the pilot's seat) came down nicking his arm and went all the way through the meaty part of his hip, missing the hip joint - made quite a hole and left large scar marks where it entered and left the hip. But he was returned to duty in about 2 months and flew 56 more missions. He had flown the B-26 over the house at Terhune in May '43 just before flying over the North Atlantic in June to the war. He made several passes over our house: my grandmother, mom and dad, and me were home that morning -what a thrill that was - and noisy."
