Five tornados hit Charleston that day and killed many of Charleston's citizens. Frank and William were at the market conducting business. William told me (Edward Hethington, Jr.) that his father had sent him to buy a pack of cigarettes at the time the Tornado hit the market. That trip saved his life that day. In reference to D.C. Rhodes who married Maggie Disert:
In 1870, he (D.C. Rhodes) married Maggie, daughter of Samuel Disert, Sr., who was born in Cumberland County, Penn., September 16, 1812, a son (here we're still in reference to Sam Disert, born in 1812) of Samuel Disert and Margaret (Au) Disert, who were also natives of Pennsylvania and of German and Irish origin.

History of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, p. 800. Chicago, IL: Warner, Beers & Co.,1887, pgs., 800-801
D. C. RHODES, blacksmith, Stoufferstown, P. O. Chambersburg, was
born in Franklin County, January 21, 1847, a son of Christian and Martha
(Metz) Rhodes, natives of Pennsylvania, and of English and German origin,
respectively. In early life Christian Rhodes was a miller, later a farmer; his
family consisted of five sons and four daughters, of whom D. C. is the sixth
child. Our subject grew to manhood in his native county, and was educated
in the district school. At the age of seventeen he commenced to learn the
blacksmith's trade, which he followed one year. In 1866 he enlisted in the
United States Regular Army, and served three years, two and a half of which
he was orderly sergeant of the company which served among the Indians in
the West. At the close of his term of service he returned to Chambersburg,
completed his apprenticeship, and has since worked at his trade in Stouffers-
town. He does all the work on the wagons made here, also on farming imple-
ments manufactured in the town, and usually employs two blacksmiths. In
1870 he married Maggie, daughter of Samuel Disert, Sr., who was born in
Cumberland County, Penn., September 16, 1812, a son of Samuel and Margaret
(Au) Disert, who were also natives of Pennsylvania and of German and Irish
origin. Mr. Disert is a prominent farmer in this township. Mr . and Mrs.
Rhodes have two children: D. Frank and H. Edgar. Mr. Rhodes is a mem.
ber of the I. O. O. F. . and an active and energetic Republican.

Concerning the individuals in the Descendancy of Johanes Henrich (John Henry) Aue/Aü and Christine Barbara Lutz:
Donna Forney Clark:
A VERY LONG STORY SHORTENED:

THE PLAYERS:
Johanes Henrich (John Henry) Aue/Aü (b. abt. 1745- d. 1821)
Christine Barbara Lutz (b. abt. 1754- d. 1818)]
Maria Margaret Au (b.1784), daughter of Johanes and Christine Lutz Aue/Aü
Samuel Baughman, husband of Maria Margaret Au
Margaret Au
Samuel Disert (b. abt. 1780)
Samuel Disert (b. 1810)

THE SETTING:
Cumberland Co., PA, and Franklin Co., PA, (abt. 1780-1810)

THE SET-UP:
1. Originally in our database I listed Maria Margaret Au (b.1784) as the wife of Samuel Disert (b. abt. 1780).

THE CRISIS:
2. Maria Margaret Au (b.1784) was married instead to Samuel Baughman.

THE EPHIPHANY:
3. Samuel Disert's wife was also named Margaret Au. Their son Samuel Disert (b. 1810) was born in Cumberland Co., PA, the same county where Johanes Henrich (John Henry) Aue/Aü and Christine Barbara Lutz lived, yet I have no proof that Maria Margaret Au Baughman and Margaret Au Disert are the same person.

THE REMEDY AND RESOLUTION:
4. The Descendancy of Johanes Henrich (John Henry) Aue/Aü and Christine Barbara Lutz is still in our database, but now it is free-floating, unattached from our line until I can find the connection with our Margaret Au.

MBG: Emsey Gillispie, my grandfather, has a long remained the mystery in our family. All we know is he said he came to Coal River by way of Tazewell, Virginia to Malden, W.Va . to work as a cooper (barrel maker) in the salt works, and brought two sisters with him. One married an Adkins in Logan County, W.Va., and the other one married a Mays who lived across the road from what is now Angel Terrace. Born in 1816, he probably got to Malden in 1840, then to Coal River , where he married Cornelia Elizabeth Gillispie, daughter of Samuel Gillispie the 2nd. There he worked as a lockmaster at lock 6, just below the mouth of Fork Creek, until the steamboats quit running on Coal River. In my opinion he was the son or grandson of Phillip Gillispie, the gun maker whose father Matthew had come from Pennsylvania by Way of England. The family made the famous Pennsylvania long rifle. Moved to near Asheville, N.C. and I think they scattered from there to Augusta County, Virginia. Several came over the mountains going to new settlements in Greenbrier Co. and the Kanawha Valley. Emsey had a son named Phillip and Emsey was famous as a rifle shot. His oldest son James was a frequent visitor at our house and he had a distinct English accent. I think this family emigrated From Melrose, Scotland to England where work was plentiful and there was a ready sale for guns, rather than go to Ireland. They came to America for the same reason: a market for their product and trade. They were still Scotsmen. Uncle James died at Peytona, W.Va., in 1930. MURL B. GILLISPIE May 3, 1980
And again from MBG Genealogy: In 1879 when my grandpa Emsey and wife, Sam,
Robert P and Phil moved to Alum Creek from Holly Hurst (mouth Fork Creek) they used a horse and sled. From Bee Tree Mountain down to the Junior High School there was no road - they used the Creek bed. Before that there was a lane from the DeBoard form - now about where high school is to the Zicafoose farm -Watt Childress place near Hopewell Church and a lane from near high school out to Barton place, now Charles Henry Gillispie.
