Pages 33-34 appear in a copy of original text below (as a history) or at http://www.forneyclarkgenealogy.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=3321&medialinkID=5906:
Mike Barrett has transcribed the text of pp. 33-34 at his site:
"Caleb was a man of versatile genius. He was capable of turning his genius to profit was well as pleasure. His various avocations of farmer, agent, photographer, jewler, etc., gave him advantage of obtaining general knowledge, and studying human character. He had seen much of life’s sunny side, as well as the side of adversity. He was an excellent conventionalist, a jester and agreeable with his friends.
Roxy Jane” as his intimate acquaintances knew him, was on a canvassing tour in the interest of a map publishing company in Indianapolis. Roxy was a good talker and his map speech was a pretty, musical one and usually proved a winning card. He called at the law office of William H English[2], who was later the democratic nominee for vice-president with General Hancock at the head of the ticket.
With a polite bow Roxy was ushered into the presence of Mr. English, when he unrolled his map and began his persuasive speech. The listener apparently became more and more interested as Roxy proceeded; which mark of attention led the young canvasser to believe that he was drawing his auditor closer and tighter into his wily meshes.
Mr. English did not interrupt him until he had finished the finely worded language; and then it was that Roxy received the severest blow to his genius that had ever befallen him. The great statesman and politician across from his desk, and himself addressed the young map canvasser: My good sir, I do not want your map, but I should like to buy that song you sing so sweetly."

The following information is from Mary L. Sterling Price Alderman
Sterling Price Alderman was a native of Collins county, Texas, where he was born in 1862. He was the third child of a family of seven, born to James Madison Alderman and Sarah Jane Kinder.
His father was a rancher and farmer, originally from Virginia, from where he moved to Ohio and there to Missouri before settling in Brownsville, Nebraska in 1854. After living here for a time he moved to Texas, later to Kansas City, Missouri, and then returned to Brownsville, a small town in Nemaha County, Nebraska.
Sterling Price was reared and educated in Brownsville. At the age of 18, he started out for himself and for 14 years was engaged in railroad work on the Burlington, Missouri railroad and the Northwestern (later called Chicago, Northwestern which ran from Sioux city, Iowa through the northern part of Nebraska) being employed as an operator and station agent.
Beginning in 1880 he was stationed at Holdrege, Dorchester, Plattsmouth, LaPlatte, Oreopolis Junction for short periods and during 1887-89 he was on duty at Johnson, Nemaha County, Nebraska followed by short assignments at Saxonville, Ashton, Hat Creek, St. Paul and Palmer.
He was a bill clerk for Wells Fargo Express Company at the Burlington and Missouri depot at Omaha. Retuning to railroad work he served a short time at Scribner and between the years of 1890-94 he was station agent at Newport, Nebraska.
The exportation of wild hay came as a result of a telegram from the east to Mr. Alderman at Newport, inquiring as to the possibility of buying wild hay. Price went to see Thomas McCune about cutting his wild hay. Native hay grown in the sandhills was of excellent quality, mostly of blue stem variety.
The principal hay producing area was located in Rock and Holt counties. Very little hay was cut west of Bassett.
In the later years, Price quit the railroad and established a general merchandise business, “S. Alderman Company” which he operated for two years. Then disposing of this business, he went into the hay business. He remained there until 1899 when he moved to Bassett and opened up the same kind of business, continuing this until 1900.
He then went into the hardware and supply business in partnership with E. L. Myers in the Bassett Hardware and Supply company. They had a large trade from the start and had developed an extensive enterprise at the time he disposed of it in 1907.
In that year, Mr. Alderman built a large hay shed and engaged exclusively in that line of work, some years shipping as high as a thousand cars of hay.
In 1907, the “Nebraska Gazeteer” stated that Newport had the unique distinction of being the largest wild hay shipping point in Nebraska and one of the largest in the world.
Mr. Alderman took an active part in county politics and was a Democrat. He served on the town board, was an Odd Fellow, Modern Workman and formerly a member of Pythian Lodge.
Sterling Price married Edith Morrison, a daughter of William F. and Elizabeth Jones Morrison at Ft. Madison, Iowa, May 15, 1887. Her parents were old settlers at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, coming there in 1865 before any railroads reached that point. Mr. Morrison was schoolteacher and later engaged in the meat business at Plattsmouth.
Mr. And Mrs. Alderman had six children: Gertrude, Charles, Ruth, Ralph, Esther and Thelma.
The couple retired to Long Pine and Ruth lived and ran the boarding house and café for railroad men.
Sterling Price loved to fish Pine creek and kept the restaurant supplied with 24-25 inch trout.
Sterling Price and Edith are both buried in the Bassett cemetery.

Anecdote on Frank Cilek, Sr. 1853-1931:
"Frank, Sr was the grandfather of Helen (Cilek) Alderman; great-grandfather of Jim Alderman and [Name omitted].
Frank Cilek was born near Tabor, Bohemia. November 4th, 1853. He was educated in the rural schools of his native country. Early in life he became very fond of Bohemian literature, a field of knowledge that interested him all of his life and with which he became so familiar that he frequently quoted selections from it.
In 1867 he came to America with his parents and his brother, Martin. The family came on a sailing vessel and landed at Quebec, after a stormy voyage lasting seven weeks. They settled at Winona, Minnesota. Here Frank, 14 years old, with other harvest hands bound grain that was cut by the first McCormick reaper used in that locality. For several years after arriving at Winoma, Frank worked at various occupations incident to the improvement of the new country. For a while he worked on a gravel train west of Winoma. Then on a freight steamer that plied between St. Paul and St. Louis, at another time on rafts of logs that were floated down the Mississippi to the saw mills. At other times he cleared land of forest trees that it might be placed under cultivation.
In 1874 he went to western Kansas and settled on a 160-acre tract of land. In making the journey, he passed through Omaha and Lincoln and from there to Humboldt in southeastern Nebraska, where he became one of a party of fifty prospective homesteaders, the most of whom were from Iowa and Missouri. This covered wagon caravan forded the Big Blue and the Little Blue rivers and numerous other streams. The most of them took homesteads in Decatur County, Kansas. Buffalo were still somewhat plentiful in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. Frank, with other homesteaders, enjoyed the sport of hunting them. On account of drought and grasshoppers he left Kansas in 1875 and returned to Winona where the following year he married Mary Bartizal. Soon after their marriage they came to Nebraska to make their home. They went to Grand Island where there was a government land office with Gilbert M Hitchcock, later a United States Senator, in charge. At his suggestion they located in Howard county near St. Paul where they lived for some years.
In 1888 the family came to Sheridan county and settled on Beaver Creek where they lived until 1901. When they sold their farm and moved back to St. Paul, Nebraska. They lived there but one year when they returned to Sheridan county and settled near Hay Springs where the Cileks spent the remainder of their days.
Frank died at his home in Gordon at the age of seventy-eight years. Mary passed on in 1917.
Six children were born to Mary and Frank.
Frank was modest in giving public expression to his Spiritual convictions but when necessary he could do so. During the years that he was a pioneer in Howard county, then sparsely settled, he preached 24 funeral sermons. He is spoken of in the highest terms by those who knew him for many years. He was a man of character, one whose actions were dominated by principles of right.
Funeral services were held in Hay Springs Sunday afternoon and interment was made in the Hay Springs cemetery. [the Hay Springs newspaper, Nebraskan?, Friday, September?]
He offered his granddaughter Helen Cilek a piano training course, in Prague, Chechoslovakia on the condition she come back home after her graduation and live with the Cilek family rather than stay at home with her mother Lucy Belle (Bayliff] Cilek. Helen refused the offer." (By: Jim Alderman, son of Helen Cilek, as this story was said to me.]

William Price Alderman
" William Price Alderman was born Feb. 16, 1896, the sixth child of the 10 children born to Wm. Henry and Anna Rosailee Peterson Alderman in the living quarters above Rock County Bank of Newport, NE.
Price joined the armed services on June 25, 1918, took his basics at Ft. Riley, KS, and then to Camp Merit, N.J., where the troops were put on the ship "Empress of Russia" for the trip overseas. However, Price contracted the flu and was later discharged on Dec. 31, 1918 at Ft. Dodge, IA. Upon his return home from the service he, his father, his brothers and brothers-in-law, all worked phases of the Newport haying business.
On March 28, 1937 he was united in marriage to Grace May Utter, a school teacher who also was a lifelong resident of Rock County, except for a few years in her early life spent with her parents in Boyd and Keya Paha counties.
Price baled hay and ranched seven miles north and one mile east of Newport until 1954, when he and Grace built and operated Alderman's service station and lunch room on south edge of Newport at the junction of Highways 20 and 137. They continued to operate the station until1968 when they retired. After retirement they remained active in community and family affairs.
He proudly joined the American Legion in 1919 and remained a continuous and faithful member for 66 years. He was also a member of the Veterans of WWII.
Price and Grace were married 47 years at the time of his death, Oct. 12, 1984. He was laid to rest at the Newport cemetery.
He was very proud of the fact that an Alderman had lived in Newport for over 100 years. His uncle, Sterling Price Alderman having come to Newport about 1881 or 1882 as the first depot agent in Newport and Bassett."

"James M. Alderman was drafted into the Confederate Army in 1862 and served under the leadership of Gen. Sterling Price in Gen. Douglas Cooper's division. Upon the ending of the Civil war, he returned to his wife and three children in Collin County, TX.
They then moved to Kansas City where J.M. was born and then back to historic Brownville.
Here he operated a flat boat ferry across the Missouri river. It is believed to be the first licensed ferry on the river. In 1892 James and Sarah moved to Newport to be near their sons and their families, William and James Madison. Another son, Sterling Price was at Long Pine."

JAMES M. ALDERMAN
James M. Alderman is a wholesale dealer in choice Elkhorn valley hay, with headquarters at Newport, Nebraska, and meets a constant demand for his goods from many quarters. A man of push and energy, he asks no favors as he meets the competition of trade. He is resourceful in emergencies, knows what he wants, and meets to the letter every engagement or representation that he makes. Newport counts him among its most enterprising and pushing citizens.
Mr. Alderman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, August 16, 1870, a son of James M., Sr., and Sarah J. (Kinder) Alderman. Alderman blood comes from Germany, though the parents of the subject of this writing were American-born. The senior Alderman was for a time a nurseryman in Brownville, Nebraska, where our subject was reared and educated. He is the fifth child in a family of seven sons and one daughter born to his parents.
When Mr. Alderman was twenty years of age he took upon himself the direction of his own life, and in the month of June, 1890, he came to Newport, Nebraska, with the intention of learning the telegraphic art. Here, however, he found his brother already well established in business, and the younger Alderman was appointed postmaster, a position which he held for some four years, proving very acceptable to the patrons of the office. When he finally left the postoffice he did so that he might go into another line of business that did not seem to be fully covered by any enterprise already established in Newport. In 1895 he went into the hay business, in which he has increased his dealings every year. In the territory stretching from Wood Lake to Stuart he has bought hay very extensively, and has maintained offices at both Wood Lake and Bassett. For a time he worked in partnership with W. H.. Allen, but of late years has operated alone. How extensive his operations have been may be judged from the fact that in 1907 he shipped from Newport alone over twelve hundred carloads of hay.
Mr. Alderman was married November 14, 1898, to Miss Grace Barr, whose father, John Barr, was at one time much interested in the oil business in Pennsylvania. The mother, who was Eva Mason prior to marriage, in after years became an old settler in Nebraska, and for a time lived in a sod house on a homestead claim, quite a contrast to the comfortable dwellings of the east. To Mr. and Mrs. Alderman have come three children to bless their union--Geneva, Donald and Anona.
Mr. Alderman is a stanch Democrat, is a member of the Royal Highlanders, and with his family is a communicant of the Episcopal church.

Anecdote on James Madison Alderman, Jr. 1913-2004:
"James was born June 22, 1913 in Newport, Nebraska. He had a twin sister Eugenia Margretta. Eugenia passed away last year May 17, 2003 just short of her 90th birthday. James passed away 4 days after his 91st birthday, June 26, 2004.
James married Helen Marie Cilek April 20, 1935 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
James and Helen have two children. James Alderman, III [Date omitted.] [Name and date omitted.]
His wife Helen passed away in 1973.
He later married Angela Rezac in 1976. James retired from Fairmont Foods a year later and He and Angie moved to San Marcos, California. Angie” passed away in 1994 from complication of a surgery.
James worked in operations for Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant Co. during W.W.II. The plant was located outside of Omaha, Nebraska. James received an Excellence in War Production Award January 6, 1944. After the war he worked for Fairmont Foods Company in Concordia, Kansas as manager of the locker plant. He retired in 1977 as shipping manager for "Kitty Clover" a sub division of Fairmont Foods.
Just after the war broke out in December of 1941, James couldn’t enlist as he had a bad leg. He had polio when he was a youngster and one of the tendons in his leg shrunk. This made his heel rise to the point where it was real hard for him to walk. But he wanted to serve in some capacity of the war. He applied and was accepted on his job application to work at the Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, southeast of Omaha.
James loved outdoor activities. He was considered a very good trout fisherman. Like his father and grandfather he was a very good marksman.
His favorite baseball player was St. Louis pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander.
His favorite team was Nebraska's football team that upset "The Four Horsemen" of Notre Dame.
One of his greatest thrills as a boy was when he was a filling station attendant. He got to fill up Clark Gable’s car. Clark Gable and Carol Lombard were passing through Nebraska on their honeymoon.
He loved his German Shepard, Duke. Many tales have been shared about his adventures with Duke in the 1920s while living in Newport, Nebraska.
Not to be left out, he also had some indoor activities.
James was always organizing poker meetings (penny ante) at his house with friends. He was very devoted to his Kiwanis clubs. He was members of in Concordia, Kansas and San Marcos, Ca.
James and Helen left having four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
What I will always keep in the back of my mind to follow from him is his sincere honesty and integrity. These were characteristics that he learned from his father James Madison Alderman, Sr."

"A tribute to our Father by [names omitted] his children:
Dad was a gem. He was always giving, never taking; forever an
optimist and he always let us know that we were all equally special. He
was very proud of each of his kids and grandkids. He loved his wife the
way it talks about in Ephesians 5:25 of husbands love your wife the way
that Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. We learned
through our father's example the value of hard work, perseverance, and
honesty. His sense of humor and smile were always a delight. He was not
a rich man by worldly standards, but was a very contented man, and I
believe his contentment was because of the wealth of friends and family
that he had throughout his lifetime. It was easy to look up to him and
respect him for who he was because of the way he lived his life.
And now that he has parted from this life, his tenderhearted spirit
stays with each of us who knew him best. He always had stories to tell
us about growing up in Newport and about his German Shepherd dog Duke.
He would tell us that he graduated fourth in his class at Newport High
School, and then would say of course they only graduated four that year
in 1933. Dad didn't like to get too far from home and would relate to us
how homesick he would get even working in the hayfield a few miles south
of Newport when he was growing up. This was really put to the test later
in life when he told us the story leaving Newport News, Virginia to serve
his country in WWII. He talked about the shoreline getting smaller and
smaller and not knowing whether he would ever see this country again or
his wife and two kids that he was leaving behind.
Dad had lots of basketball stories. One of the favorites was going
to Wood Lake to play, but John Bradford Alderman, Sr.
Newport's coach was sick and he sent those boys to Wood Lake and told
them to be good and not run the score up. Dad said they scored over one
hundred points, but they were nice they even made one basket for Wood
Lake.
Dad loved to talk and argue politics. He was an ordinary average
guy with an extraordinary personality, and if your were lucky enough to
know him then you would be the better person. He was a friend to many
young, old, and in between, and if we had a choice to live our life over
again we would pick him for our dad. We love you dad."
