In 1846, he was united in marriage with Miss Ann Rebecca Smith; she was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, April 21, 1825. Her father. H. W. Smith, was a native of Maryland and a pioneer of this county; his occupation was farming and merchandising. To Mr. and Mrs. Skeeles have been born eight children, of whom five have survived-C. M., born May 25, 1848, married to Ann, daughter of Dr. Willingman, of New Cumberland, Tuscarawas County; Thomas William, married to Maggie, daughter of James Cotter. of Carroll County: Luella J., wife of J. Mr. Skeeles has served his township as Trustee, and was Enrolling Officer of Warren Township. In politics, he is a Republican, and, with his wife, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, where he has been a class-leader and steward for years. He owns 124 acres of well-improved land in Union Township. which he has brought under a high state of cultivation.

ALMOND PHILLIPS' BIBLE
"Almond Phillips was the third son of John and Emeline. Almond's son Homer, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, applied for a government pension. On July 19, 1938 he took his parents' family Bible to a notary public in Hendricks County, Indiana. The notary, William F. Evans, examined the Bible and certified that it hadn't been erased or altered. Evans certified that it was "the family Bible of John Almond Phillips and Viola Whitsett Phillips." On June 20, 1938 Homer sent the Veterans Administration a photostatic copy of "the old family Bible" with a cover letter stressing that the Bible showed he "was born in 1878 instead of of 1879." Unfortunately, a copy of this record, provided by the VA in 1996, is not wholly legible. The vital dates for Almond and wife Viola are the only readable dates. The names Lauretta Herrod, Flora Phillips and Porter Phillips are also legible.

Minneapolis Messenger, Jan. 4, 1951, page 8:
Henry Nashville Coatney, only child of Harrison and Henrietta Coatney, was born in Deputy, Jennings County, Indiana, Feb. 27, 1867. He departed this life at the home in Ada, December 27, 1950 at the age of 83 years and 10 months.

His father, a soldier of the Civil War, died when Henry was 9 months old, and his mother when he was 9 years old. After the death of his mother, he came to Minneapolis to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. James Hanners. Mrs. Hanners was his mother's sister. In this home, with the thirteen Hanners children, he grew to manhood.

On New Year's day, 1888, he was married to Margaret Jane Kirkland. They established a hom on a farm in the Sumnerville community, where two children, Lola and Ray, were born. This also became the home of Anna Kirkland, sister to Mrs. Coatney, following the death of their mother.

In 1895 the family moved from the Sumnerville community to the Ada community, where they lived on the farm now occupied by the Ray Coatney family. Mrs. Coatney passed away May 21, 1911. In March of the following year Mr. Coatney moved to Ada, to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. P.C. Van Meter, until the spring of 1913.

On April 30, 1913, Mr. Coatney was married to Lena J. Brion, widowed mother of three children, Clay, Ray, and Ruth. To this union one son, Kale, was born. Ruth preceded him in death in November, 1927, Mrs. Coatney on February 21, 1928, and the son, Kale, in Germany on April 26, 1945.

Mr. Coatney was converted and became a member of the Antioch Baptist Church of Ada, October 27, 1895, of which he continued a loyal member. He was a quiet, unassuming friend to all who knew him.

Those left to mourn his passing are: two children Mrs. Lola Van Meter of Salina, and Ray, of rural Ada; two stepsons, Lt. Col. Clay W. Brion of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Ray Brion of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren, Ray Irvin Coatney of Kansas City, Kansas; Harlan Coatney of Ada; and Mrs. Larry Farmer, of Pratt, Kans.; two step-grandchildren, several great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Ada Baptist church, with Rev. Ernest Smart in charge. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery
