The following text accompanies a photo of Albert Edison Coatney (1902-1981) standing beside his 1949 Plymouth automobile:
"The picture with my dad is a 1949 Plymouth. This car was a loner car from a repair shop my dad used. His 1952 Chevy was in for repairs when this picture was taken. When I was about 13 or 14 years old my dad bought this very same Plymouth from the repair shop for I think thirty five dollars. He gave this car to me and I used it as a field racer. We lived on a 5 acre mini farm at the time and I had made a race track through the apple orchard. I drove this car until the engine blew up. Took about a month if I recall. Then I disassembled the engine in hopes of repairing it. The car never ran again. I pulled it out behind the barn with a tractor and used a chain to roll it over on to its top. I then used it for target practice with my shotgun. When we moved from that place I had to cough up money to get that car hauled to a junkyard as stipulated in the contract to sell the house. After this car died I bought a few more field racers. I bought my dad a movie camera one year for Christmas. He took a movie (I still have it) of me sliding around in the mud and snow in an old Ford." Don Coatney, 8/2006

PERSONAL HISTORY:
Donald Gordon "Don" Coatney:
"I recall going out to the garage with my father most every Saturday morning when we lived in the house located at 325 North Bancroft Street in Indianapolis, Indiana. When I drove through Indianapolis earlier this month in my 1948 Plymouth I drove by the Bancroft Street house and the garage is still standing. We moved to this house sometime around 1950 when I was three years old. Cars in those days used an alcohol based anti freeze solution in the radiator to prevent freeze-up in the winter. This alcohol worked well but the alcohol portion of the solution would evaporate with heat and needed to be replenished on a regular basis. So my dad would do this every Saturday morning. I remember as my dad worked on the car I would use the front fenders as a slide. I would climb to the top of the fender and slide down to the running board. After a few trips up and down the fender I would get bored and my attention would then be directed to the grill on the front of the car. The grill had vertical slats and I would play them like a banjo by raking my fingers across them.

My parents made many trips in this 1937 Packard from Indianapolis to Belmont, Indiana to visit Uncle Jim. This was about a 50 mile trip. In the winter my dad would heat bricks in the coal furnace in the basement of the house on Bancroft street. He would wrap these heated bricks in newspaper and place them on the floor in the back seat of the Packard. My sister and I then had a heat source at least for the first few miles of the trip.

I learned much later in life that the Packard Automobile had a very unique grill for it's time. The slats in the grill were actually shutters that were thermostatically controlled. When the car engine was cold the shutters would close restricting air flow across the radiator. Once the engine was warm the slats would open and allow air movement across the radiator to cool the engine.

Heaters in cars in those days were marginal at best. Most cars came from the factory with no heaters. Dealers would install aftermarket heaters of three types. One was a small fined coil connected to the cooling water in the engine. These heaters did produce heat but there was no outside fresh air vent so the air in the car was circulated through the heater. Another type was a duct to allow hot air from the exhaust manifold to blow into the cabin. As exhaust leaks in these cars were common this heater also allowed carbon monoxide to enter the cabin. Third type was a gasoline powered heater. This heater would actually burn gasoline inside the cabin. Many car fires were the result along with forcing the occupants to breathe the combustion fumes." Don Coatney: "My father Albert Edison Coatney was born in 1902 and in his writing has referred to William J. Johnson as "Buffalo Bill" Johnson. In 1888 William J. Johnson along with his wife Mary Eveline Townsend Morgan Johnson and my Grandfather Benjamin Harrison Coatney with his wife Hattie Magnolia Morgan and their two young sons moved from Indiana to Arkansas living in Perla, Malvern, Hot Springs and possibly other areas. Soon a couple of my Grandfather's brothers, Charles Edward Coatney and George Combe Coatney, joined them there. They stayed until 1895 (leaving in somewhat of a hurry as Benjamin had heard the rumor that the constable was after him for committing the crime of taking pictures for profit on a Sunday). They moved to Indianapolis, but I am not sure if the Johnson's came with them."

"The school bus in the picture was parked in that same location for years. Uncle Jim [James "Jim" Kent (1889-1975)] had not used it as a school bus for a long time. I used to play in it when I was very young. Sometime in the 1940's Uncle Jim converted this school bus to a camper. Today the term is "RV". He removed the seats and installed a bed, kitchen area, and a couple of comfortable chairs. He then went on an extended trip out west. This bus had a top speed of somewhere around 45 MPH. As Uncle Jim was a farmer the repairs he made to this bus most always included the use of bailing wire. The trip was a success. Uncle Jim collected decorative plates with the names of all the States he visited. When I would visit him and ask about the plates he would always tell me stories about the trip in the bus. I think I still have a few of these plates but they are hiding somewhere. Texas was his favorite state. He always carried his shot gun with him on these trips. He was an expert trap and skeet shooter and would stop along the way and enter shooting contests winning many of them. I still have his well worn shotgun and my guess is there had been more than a semi load of shells fired through this gun." Don Coatney, 9/2006

The following text accompanies a photo of James "Jim" Kent (1889-1975) standing beside his 1948 Buick Roadmaster automobile:
"The car in the picture with my Uncle Jim is a 1948 Buick Roadmaster. Uncle Jim bought this car new. Sometime in the late 50's early 60's this car was retired. While visiting one time I replaced the fuel pump on this car and got it running. I went racing across the cow pasture at about 50 miles per hour and about wrecked. Uncle Jim did not let me drive it after that. When Uncle Jim sold the farm and moved to the city the old Buick was hauled across the road and placed high on a hill above my cousins farm house. It sat there for many years. Lisa and I made a trip to the area in the early 80's before we were married. I was driving an Oldsmobile convertible at the time and Lisa and I were dressed in comfortable (read skimpy) summer attire. I stopped and looked for the Buick but I did not find it. I stopped at my cousins farm house and a couple of older ladies in beehive hairdos and long dresses answered the door. I asked about the Buick and was told someone bought it and hauled it off the hill. Talked a bit further and found that these ladies were my cousins." Don Coatney 8/2006

Moved to Cole [sic] River in 1810 around Racine, West Virginia.
POINDEXTER TONEY was born in 1763 son of William and Margaret (Sutherland) Toney of Franklin County, Virginia. He died about 1835 and is buried near Toneys Branch in Boone County. He may have served in the Revolutionary War because it is known that his twin brother, Carey, served. He may have been with other members of the Toney family when their ginseng camp on Toneys Branch was raided by Indians in the early 1790's. We know that his brother, John Toney, owned land there at that time. He married lst Mary Rawson of Franklin County, Virginia in 1788 and 2nd Jane Lilly, daughter of Robert, in 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Some people have the theory that his lst wife and children may have been killed in the raid on the "Rooting Camp", but there doesn't seem to be a tradition in this area of such deaths.
Children of Poindexter and Jane were: Frances who m. Edley Elkins; Mary; James who m. Nancy Gillispie; Carey who m. lst a dau. of Nathan Turley, 2nd Telitha V.
Bailey; Robert who m. lst Penedomonia Foster and 2nd Ellen Lavette, a schoolteacher; Margaret who m. lst John G. Jarrell, 2nd her cousin, William Toney; Harvey who m. Maria Fauber; Jane who m.
