POINDEXTER TONEY was born in 1763 son of William and Margaret (Sutherland) Toney of Franklin County, Virginia. He died about 1835 and is buried near Toneys Branch in Boone County. He may have served in the Revolutionary War because it is known that his twin brother, Carey, served. He may have been with other members of the Toney family when their ginseng camp on Toneys Branch was raided by Indians in the early 1790's. We know that his brother, John Toney, owned land there at that time. He married lst Mary Rawson of Franklin County, Virginia in 1788 and 2nd Jane Lilly, daughter of Robert, in 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Some people have the theory that his lst wife and children may have been killed in the raid on the "Rooting Camp", but there doesn't seem to be a tradition in this area of such deaths.
Children of Poindexter and Jane were: Frances who m. Edley Elkins; Mary; James who m. Nancy Gillispie; Carey who m. lst a dau. of Nathan Turley, 2nd Telitha V. Note: From MBG Genealogy: Theophilus Galasby, son of Samuel, was born in 1776. He died in Logan County after 1860 at the home of his niece, Nancy Gillispie Adkins (Aaron Adkins). He was recorded as being 85 years old in the 1860 Logan census. Wife Mary Champ, died before 1860. Samuel II, Theopolis, son James - about all old ones, maybe 20 buried at BulI Creek at Mikes Branch. Only one stone, that of James, marked. Can't find others, but know alI in two rows, including two Negro slaves buried beside James at his request - now called Holstein cemetery. As you go up the cemetery road, they lie just above the road - next to the road.

Mamie E. Toney was the second wife of Erastus Duncan Workman. She was born Feb 1874 in Boone County, WV. I have no death date but I know that Erastus was married a third time. Mamie lived in my great grandparents home in 1900 (Census and family stories). I don't know who her parents were. She was a school teacher. My grandfather (Harry Richard Toney) spoke of her as his adopted sister. Her daughter was Opal. Opal Workman married Howard P. Spradling; they had three children, Betty Jean, Norma Lee and Roy Spradling.

From the Boone County West Virginia History, 1990 Boone County Genealogical Society, Inc.
Moved to Cole [sic] River in 1810 around Racine, West Virginia.
