FAMILY HISTORY: "Benjamin BARTON, Esq. (son of Thomas) resided with his parents--the area was ceded to South Carolina--between the forks of the Pacolet River, Ninety-Six Dist., Spartanburg Co. (near the present town f Fingerville), during the Revolutionary War. In 1780, while in service, he became acquainted with Dorcas ANDERSON (dau. of John Anderson and Sarah Carney) while she was under protection in Earle's Fort, near Landrum, S.C., but across the State line. They were married, 9/4/1783, at the home of her mother, about one mile above the fork of the Pacolet River (Pension File W-20683). They removed to Pendleton Dist., now Pickens Co., S.C., where he died, 2/16/1818.", Historical Southern Families, Vol. VIII, John Bennett Boddie, 1970.

MILITARY "Benjamin served 253 days Militia duty, after May 12, 1780 (fall of Charleston) 1782, as a private under Capt. Major Parsons, Col. Benjamin Roebucks Regiment, South Carolina Troops; served in a Block House on the line, came in service to Earl's Fort, in scouting parties in the surrounding Country and one battle." (BART287)
MILITARY Cited in Barton Roll of Honor, compiled by Carl James Barton, first ed. 2001 "Took part in the Battle of the Cowpens, in South Carolina. This battle took place on 17 Jan 1781, in figting that lasted just an hour; an outnumbered Patriot army under General Daniel Morgan destroyed a crack British unit commanded by the feared and hated Colonel Banastre Tarleton. There are indications that Benjamin may have been part of the Battle at King's Mountain. In the book "The King's Mountain Men" by Katherine K. White, she lists him as being at this battle. However, the book "The Patriot's of King's Mountain" by Bobby G. Moss list's him as possibly serving at this battle as there is no official documentation to prove this at this time. Mr. Moss' book "Patriots at the Cowpens" he does list Benjamin as being at this battle. (REF: Revolutionary War Pension File W-20 683 [sic], obit of wife Dorcas (Anderson) Barton dated 19 Jan 1850 and Dorcas' pension application) (pg397)" (BART385)

INFO: "Thomas Barton Sr (or Thomas(4) as he is sometimes called) was born c1732 in Virginia according to the only documented source I have discovered. This source was cited by Jason E Barton in his "The Book of Barton" (or "Barton Blue Book" as it is more commonly called) which was published August 10, 1969 according to the Barton Bulletin, Christmas 1969. (There is no date or title in the Barton Historical Society copy.) This book is made of 8 1/2" x 11" pages bound in a two hole binder and is 3" thick. On pages 1 and 2-A, Jason cites Application for membership, Children of the American Revolution, filed by Lecy Leona Barton. (Priscilla Alden Chapter, Temple, TX; submitted 24 March 1966, approved 16 October 1967; N.S.C.A.R. No. 101939). Whatever source Lecy Leona Barton used was not disclosed. (Note that The Barton Book, Second Edition, compiled by Robert D. Nally and published in 1996 states that Thomas Barton was born c 1723. This is the date commonly repeated by current family members, but Nally doesn't say where he got it. It appears that it may be a simple transposition of numbers.)
If anyone can cite a documented or historical basis for either date, we will be pleased to include it in this posting. In the meantime, we'll use the c1732 date.
As a side note, many genealogies have claimed that Thomas, David and John were sons of Thomas(3) who died between October 18, 1751 and July 27, 1752. Ruth Barton Coleman and I have been quite uncomfortable with this, as Thomas was portrayed as the oldest son. The Bartons in colonial Virginia considered themselves English and used English laws and customs. In that era, primogeniture was the accepted practice. Primogeniture meant that the oldest son received the father's land holdings, and the other sons (and daughters) didn't receive the land by inheritance. If Thomas was the oldest, how could he have gone off on his own to Orange Co NC, where a record of Thomas Barton is found in 1755 tax records. However, if he was not the eldest, it is more understandable that he would have left Prince William County." from Terry Barton, Barton Historical Society, on 19 Dec 2002.

MILITARY Cited in Barton Roll of Honor, compiled by Carl James Barton, first ed. 2001 "Records in North Carolina state he served as a Militiaman. However, it is not certain if this was Thomas SR. or Thomas JR, his son. Thomas SR would have been much older man [sic] at this time and if he did serve he might have been an Officer, since men of his age would have most likely served in the Indian War earlier and in most cases these men were advanced to the officer ranks during the Revolutionary War. There are other records that Thomas SR did provide supplies to the Colonial Army during this time. (REF: Voucher #731 issued on 9 Jan 1782 & signed by David Vance in Salisbury District, North Carolina) (pg5)" (BART385)
It appears that it may be a simple transposition of numbers.) If anyone can cite a documented or historical basis for either date, we will be pleased to include it in this posting.
