"Born May 26, 1850, in Peitz, Germany, Paul John emigrated to the US in 1868, disembarking in NY. He went to Pittsfield, Mass. and was a wool finisher in a mill. He came to Chambersburg, PA, in 1869 and became a foreman in the finishing department of a Chambersburg woolen mill. He married Mary Falkenstein on October 10, 1871. In 1873 he went into the saloon business on Main Street in Chambersburg for a period of three years. In 1881 he bought the American Hotel at the corner of Queen and Second Street. This he named the FRANKLIN HOUSE. In 1892 he remodeled it and named it the HOTEL JOHN. This hotel was fully supplied with all modern appliances, including electric light, gas, bathrooms, telephones, etc, and in connection with the bar, there was an excellent restaurant. This hotel enjoyed a wide-spread popularity, and was a fine source of income to the genial host.
Mr. John was a member of George Washington Lodge, of the Mystic Shrine, and of the I.O.O.F. He was a Republican, although he never aspired to any political office. He tore down the old residence adjoining his hotel and erected on the 200 foot lot a handsome double dwelling house, well equipped and with all modern improvements. The John family was an honored one in this vicinity, and the sons and daughters grew up to be a credit to the parents who bore and reared them. "
