In a conversation concerning drop-in guests:
"....My mother's extended family lived in a BIG 3 story house in Charleston, WV, from about 1937-45 when essentially three sisters, one of whom was my maternal grandmother, and their associated husbands and kids all lived under the same roof for economic reasons. On weekends or holidays that group expanded when other relatives and friends "dropped in" from the country or came home for the weekend from college or after being on the road all week, etc. The saying was that they didn't mind the "comers and goers," it was the "comers and stayers...." I lived with this group from early 1943 through late 1945 while my dad was in WW2 in Europe. One of my earliest memories of my grandmother was her walking around the table serving mashed potatoes with a large wooden spoon out of a huge enamel dishpan. They literally had an A and a B seating for Sunday lunch like on a cruise ship- but without the shuffleboard. The women cooked several fried chickens, peeled countless potatoes, snapped a peck or two of green beans, and baked biscuits 20 at a time. I don't ever remember my grandmother baking just one pie- she baked three or four at a time."
