OBITUARY:
William Bryan Quigley was born January 29, 1899, at Valentine, Nebr. His
boyhood and early life was spent in Valentine and on his father's ranches
in Cherry County. His father, James H. Quigley, was born in San Antonio,
Texas, and accompanied several longhorn cattle drives to Nebraska until
he settled in the Valentine area in 1882 where he engaged in ranching.
His mother, Mary M. Quigley came from eastern Iowa as a schoolteacher,
and originally taught at Bordeaux near Chadron. James and Mary were married
in 1886 and had five children: James Cloyd, Margarete Clair, Gertrude,
Ruth and William Bryan.
Bryan died November 14, 1995 at Valentine at the age of 96. As a boy he
learned to hunt, trap and fish and during high school he participated in
football, boxing and basketball. Bryan left high school in 1917 to enlist
in the U.S. Army to serve on the front lines in France during battles at
Marne, Cherume Dames and Muse Argonne. From the latter he received the
French Croix de Guerre for his wounds and bravery. After the war, Bryan
was one of the c(h)arter members of the American Legion Leo Brinda Post and
remained a member during his lifetime. He advocated a prepared and strong
military for America and was a tireless supporter of military veterans
and their causes. Upon return from France he enrolled at the University
of Nebraska and received his law degree in 1923. He practiced in New York
City seven years and then spent the rest of his career in Valentine until
he retired at age 85. He was Cherry County Attorney 1935-1955. He was Red
Cross chairman 15 years including WW II period, served as president of
