COLUMBUS GROVE - J. Earl Belch, 87, of Columbus Grove, died at 1:12 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, in the Van Wert County Hospital. He was born July 19, 1916, in Columbus Grove, the son of Joseph and Mary (Hofferbert) Belch. In 1941, he married Ruth Miller, who preceded him in death in 1984. He graduated from Cincinnati School of Pharmacy in 1940, and was the president of Columbus Grove Telephone Company until 1988. He owned race horses and was a member of the Ohio Harness Horse Association, U.S. Trotting Association, the former Columbus Grove United Methodist Church, and a life member of Lima Elks Lodge 54, VFW and American Legion posts. He was a Kentucky Colonel since 1977 and a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII as a master sergeant in the general hospital unit in Manila, Philippines.(SURVIVORS OMITTED) Also preceding him in death was a sister, Janet Moser.Services were held Friday, Jan. 9, at the Hartman Sons Funeral Home in Columbus Grove, with the Rev. Gary Ginter and Dr. Sean Altstaetter officiating. Burial was in the Altstaetter Cemetery in Columbus Grove.Preferred memorials are to the Columbus Grove School's scholarship fund.
