Born on May 10th, 1942, in Centerville, Iowa, he was one of 15 children born to Jess and Margaret (Adams) Coatney. He received his education in the Centerville Schools. Upon the passing of his dad when he was young, Darriel entered the working world and fell in love with the automotive industry. All of his life, Darriel sold cars locally at Jensen Ford and Danskin Auto and then owned and operated his own Coatney Cars in Marshalltown. (Information omitted.)
