DEATH OF A CENTENNARIAN
Mrs. Barbara Ritter, mother of the venerable Jacob Ritter, of this city, and grandmother of Mesdames James R. and I. N. Miller and Isaac Hogne, died at the home of Mrs. A. Baltimore in Marble Rock, Iowa, October 11th, aged 102 years, 1 month and 11 days.
The paper ar Marble Rock says: Barbara Garber was born in Virginia, August 31, 1785. At the age of 6 years she moved with her parents to Kentucky, and at the age of 19 she was married to John Ritter who soon after moved near Dayton, Ohio, where they lived 14 years, moved from there to the southern part of Indiana, remained there a few years and moved to the northern part of the state near South Bend, St. Jo County, lived there until after the death of her husband who died in 1867, age 90 years.
Mrs. Ritter was the mother of 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls; 8 are living. The oldest was 81 his last birthday, the youngest is 61. At the time of her death she was grandmother to 48 grand-children, 120 great-grand-children, and a great many great-great-grand- children.
She has been a resident of Marble Rock and vicinity over 20 years. She retained her mental facilities to the last; she was aware of her approaching end and seemed to rejoice that it was so near.
At the age of 20 she was united with the Dunker or German Baptist Church and lived a faithful member up to the time of her death.
A beautiful life is ended, weighted with years, but rounded out by the full measure of love bestowed upon her by children, grand-children and great-grand-children, who can but feel in their loss that time has reaped what life has brought to the ripe, full ear.
#2
Barbara (aka Barbary) was the daughter of John and Barbara Garber. Her husband John Ritter died February 7, 1867 in Indiana and is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. The daughter mentioned above Mrs. A. Baltimore was Sarah (Ritter) Baltimore the wife of Ashberry Baltimore.
She was buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock, Floyd, Iowa.
