Obituary:
Carlton Gene "Buddy" Sutton, 83, of Charleston, died August 16, 2014.
Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Johnnie Cliffton Sutton and Beatrice Margaret Eagerton Sutton.
After attending school in Sumter and Florence, Carlton enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946 and after serving over twenty-two years he retired in Charleston. He went to work as a construction electrician at G.E. Turbine Cover Plant in Ladson in 1969. Buddy worked at the G.E. plant until construction completed and was then employed at the Army Transportation Depot on Remount Road as a marine electrician. After going through a reduction in force at the Army Depot, he was transferred to Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1970 and worked in Public Works, Shop 02 as a crane and heavy equipment mechanic. Carlton was later promoted to electrical heavy equipment inspector in 1975 in Code 430, Shop 440 and worked there until retirement in 1990. He worked for the federal government as a military and civil service employee for approximately forty-four years.
During his military career, he served in Korea during the Korean Conflict from October 1950 until July 1951 on board Destroyer Forrest Royal DD872, which provided fire support for the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, for which he was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Carlton's other duty stations served were Naval Recruit Training Center, Bainbridge, MD, USS Stribling-DD867, Reserve Fleet, Green Cove Springs, FL, USS Requisite-AGS-18, USS Alcona-AKA157, USS Tutuila-ARG-4, Naval Air Technical Training Center, NAS, Memphis, TN, Naval School Command, Great Lakes, IL, USS Aggressive, MSO-422, USS Pandemus-ARL-18, Staff of Admiral Kossler, Com. Mine Forces, Atlantic and USS McDonough-DLG-8.
Buddy was a member of American Legion Post 147, James Island, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 445, Disabled Veterans of America, The Rifle Club, BPOE, Elks 242 Charleston, a previous member of the AERO Club Charleston Air Force Base, Coastal Patrol Squadron, Civil Air Patrol and completed Commercial Flight Training under the G.I. Bill at Hawthorn Aviation, Charleston.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.Tuesday, August 19, 2014, in McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2014, in McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
