Valentine Chastain, Sr. was a preacher and a farmer. His marriage to Mary Robbins took place in Franklin County, Virginia, by Reverend Randolph Hall on Sept. 29, 1791. The following note was also found filed with the bond in the Franklin County Court House: "To the clerk of franklin county--Whereas Valintine Shastine and mary Robins had a greed to join hands in matreymony by aforesaid consent of each party. Signed: William Shastine and sary; Jacob Robbins and mary. Witnessess: William and Absalum Robins." Since Mary Robbins is known to have been a daughter of Jacob and Mary Robbins, it would seem to follow that Valentine was the son of William and Sary Chastain. Just who wrote the note is not known. It appears to be all in the same handwriting and yet neither the Robbins or Chastains signed with "X."
Valentine Chasteen "of Kentucky entered land in Scott County, then Jefferson County, Indiana, on September 20, 1816. On October 14, 1818, the Scaffold Lick Baptist Church was organized at the home of Valentine and Mary Chastain and duly constituted as church. Valentine was licensed to preach in 1826 and held many meetings. The minutes of Scaffold Lick on the 4th Saturday of December 1826 reads as follows: "Church unanimously agree that Brother Volintine Chastain shall have written license to preach where ever his lot may fall agreeable to what they acted 8 or 9 years ago. (signed) Peter Chastain, Clerk."
In 1832, he gave two acres of ground for the church and the cemetery. Valentine is buried at Scaffold Lick Cemetery in Scott County, Indiana.

WILIAM5 CHASTAIN (PIERRE4, PIERRE3, ESTIENNE2, JACQUES1) was born Aft. 1743 in Goochland County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1790 in Prob. Franklin County, Virginia. He married SARY(Sarah)(BARNETT?) Abt. 1764 in Virginia.
A note from Shirley Chasteen at her site above reads: "I could find no proof of William and Sary as being the parents of Valentine Sr. Pierre Chastain only had three known sons, Jean Adam, Rene Sr, and Peter Jr. Both Jean (John) and Rene left wills and William was not named in either of these wills, it has always been the concensus of the researchers of this particular Chastain line, that William was a son of Peter Jr. there is no absolute proof of this because of the loss of the Buckingham Co., Va early records. Gerre Bulands reminded me that, Robert Leishman who published our book in 1996, whose wife descended from Robert Ranson Chastain, didn't even put a question mark about the link of William to Peter Jr. I will list him this way also. As further proof that William and Sary are the parents of Valentine, see p 182 "Little Otter..." They signed for them to be married.

      Valentine Chastain
Scaffold Lick Baptist Church Cemetery is located one mile west of Blocher, Johnson Township, Scott County, Indiana. The name is derived from a "deer Lick" where early hunters had erected a "scaffold" in the branches of a tree in order to be screened from the vision of deer, buffalo and other wild animals that came to the "lick" to obtain salty water. This old lick was located between the church and the cemetery.

The church was organized October 14, 1818 and met in members' homes until the log meeting house was completed in 1819. The meetinghouse, also, served as a school. The land where the church and cemetery are located was bought on September 20, 1816 by Valentine Chasteen and donated by him.

Valentine paid taxes in Franklin Co., Virginia, first on 20 April, 1791, he last paid taxes there on 2 August, 1802.
