Histories |
 | Clark, Donald Edward: Don Clark (1921-2002) Football Article
This is an excerpt from the book, "As I Remember," written by Frank Hildebrand, a columnist for the Jennings (LA) Daily News. He is reminiscing about the great Jennings Bulldogs football teams of the past and singled out the 1939 team which had Don Clark as their All-State quarterback. That team won the Louisiana 3A State Football Championship, which was the highest category at the time. |

Name, dates, & places
Source:
David R. Clark on 8-10-2008:
"I just found a flight log my dad made at the end of WW2 when his outfit flew their C-47's back to the US from France. They started on July 15, 1945 and got back to the States nine days later on July 24. They flew a total of 64 hours and 51 minutes in ten legs covering 10,179 miles. Their aircraft didn't have the legs to fly the North Atlantic without stopping in Greenland which was frequently socked in even in the summer. And even then it was a stretch of their fuel reserves, so it was elected to go the "southern route" which they had used two years earlier when they left Florida and flew down through the Greater and Lesser Antilles, then down the eastern coast of south America to Belem at the mouth of the Amazon and then on to Natal in Brazil where it projects out toward Africa. Then they flew to an American Base called "Wideawake" (after some very noisy local birds that would keep you wide awake) on British owned Ascension Island roughly halfway between S. America and Africa. It was then over to Liberia on the west coast of Africa where is projects outward toward S. America.
They then flew northward to Dakar and then Marrakech in Morocco. Because Spain was a neutral country, they could not overfly it, so they were forced to circumnavigate it on their way to England. At the end of the war, they essentially retraced their footsteps except they started in France. At each of the nine stops they made there were American air bases built quickly at the onset of the war to facilitate the transfer of countless men and aircraft to Europe, Africa and even to India and Australia. Remember, in the early part of the war most planes did not have the range to fly the Pacific.
Interesting note- although it fell into disuse after the war, the Americans re-established their presence on Ascension Island in 1956 during the cold war, and it later became a backup landing field for the space shuttle.
During the Falklands war in 1982 the Brits asked for permission to use the field for refueling and it was from
here that they flew their first bombing missions in their effort to retake the "Malvinas" from Argentina."

Dave Clark Says [referring to his father Donald Edward Clark (1921-2002)]:
June 26th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
"My dad flew C-47’s that towed gliders full of U.S. airborne troops to Normandy the night of 5-6 June, 1944. He never mentioned it to me until in his late 70’s, when he was talking to some of his comrades at a reunion for his war time outfit and I was lucky enough to be included in the conversation. There was no bravado, no "there I was at 29,000 feet.." They were reminiscing in the most selfless fashion about their small part in one of the greatest events in history. I wish I could have recorded it and it would have lasted longer, but it was a private thing that I had just gotten a glimpse of. Better to have left it as it was. Those men will be my heroes until my dying day."

About the 437th Troop Carrier Group, USAF 1943-1945
World War II
"From May-December 1943, the 437th Troop Carrier Group trained with cargo planes in Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina. In January 1944, the group deployed to England, where it prepared for the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. During the Normandy campaign, the group released gliders over Cherbourg and carried troops, weapons, ammunition, rations, and other supplies for the 82nd Airborne Division in Operation Neptune. For these actions, the group received a Distinguished Unit Citation.
The air echelon deployed to Italy in July 1944 and participated in the Allied invasion of southern France in August 1944 dropping paratroops of the 1st Airborne Task Force. During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the group released gliders carrying troops and equipment for the airborne attack in the occupied Netherlands. In December 1944, the group re-supplied the 101st Airborne Division in the Bastogne area of Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. After moving to France in February 1945, the unit released gliders in support of an American crossing of the Rhine River called Operation Varsity in March 1945. The 437th continued to supply the offensive forces in April, while also evacuating wounded personnel to rear-zone hospitals. After V-E Day, the group evacuated prisoners of war and displaced persons to relocation centers. The group then returned to the United States and was deactivated."
(Donna Forney Clark: On Dec. 25, 2018, the last sentence in the Wiki entry reads: "The group then returned to the United States and was inactivated" which suggested that the group might be reactivated, which it was.)
