LeAnn Kelley: (CONCERNING JACOB KELLY who was b. abt. 1816 and was the son of Jacob Kelly (1865-1827) AND JACOB M. KELLY who was born in 1810 and was the son of Reuben Kelly (1791-1864):

[(Donna Forney Clark: originally, I listed the son of Jacob Kelly (1865-1827) to be Jacob M. Kelly (b. 1810), which is incorrect as LeAnn Kelley states below.)]

I see you have Jacob’s son (b. abt. 1816) listed as Jacob M. Kelly. As far as I know, no one knows his middle initial. Jacob Kelly's son was b. abt 1816, and researchers (myself included) often confuse him with his brother Reuben’s son, Jacob M. Kelly, who was b. in 1810. (The M. probably stands for Martin, his mother’s maiden name. He had a nephew named Jacob Martin Kelly which gives that theory more support.)

Jacob M. Kelly was a boat captain who eventually settled in eastern Kansas. For years I thought he was Jacob’s son until I found a story about him in a Kansas historical journal which mentioned that he had been visited by his cousin, Henry Hastings, from WV. Henry’s mother was a Martin, and the only way Henry could have been Jacob M’s cousin was if this Jacob M. Kelly in Kansas was Reuben’s son rather than his brother. I had been unable to find anything on Reuben’s oldest son Jacob until I put this together and realized I’d had him in front of me all the time. It is old Jacob’s son Jacob, b. in 1816 for whom I can find nothing other than his name in the will.
