"Gulfland- Tanker, 5,277 tons, built in 1918 at Camden, N. J., 391.1' x 51.2 ' x 30.2'. Traveling north under blackout on Oct. 20, 1943, she collided with her sister-ship, the Gulf Bell, at 10:50 p.m. She immediately blew up, and both ships caught fire. The Gulf Bell, which was empty, was towed away. The Gulfland was left and remained burning for 53 days. She drifted northwards and grounded off Hobe Sound, near the wreck of the Republic. Holes were punched in her bottom, and she sank in approximately 15 feet of water. Salvage was attempted in 1944 and she was raised, but she broke in two and the bow still remains off Hobe Sound in 28 feet of water, at Lat. 26-56-00, Long. 80-01-00 Loran 7980-Z-62026.2 and W-14351.8, and is a popular dive site today.
