HEATHINGTON,, JOHN ALLEN Loving and steadfast husband and father (born: Hethington).....Departed this earthly life peacefully on October 7, 2005, four weeks after reaching his 100th birthday. He was born in Meggetts (Charleston), South Carolina, on September 5, 1905, the eldest of 11 children of Clarence Frank and Elizabeth Jenkins (LaRoche) Hethington. His lifelong desire was to attain knowledge, and his dream of a college education was realized due to the tenacity of his mother who went to the Dean of the College of Charleston and persuaded him to admit her son on a probationary agreement: that John Allen, during his freshman year, would make up the credits he lacked in graduating from the one-room school in Meggets. He was the only member of his family to achieve a college education, earning a B.S. degree in 1928. His first job was teacher of Biology at Alexander Graham Bell Jr. High School in Charlotte,N.C., a position he reluctantly left when the Depression redirected his fortune. Despite this setback, Charlotte was to be the meeting place of his future wife of 71 years, Dorothy Ellen McDonald; they married May 6, 1933. Taking what employment was available in those difficult times, he took a job in the millinary business and remained there working for Consolidated Millinery Co. as an executive with Sanger-Harris (now Foley's) Dept. Stores until his retirement in 1969. During World War II, he served as colonel in the Army Air Corps Recruiting Station for WACS at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS. His remaining years were spent furthering pursuit of knowledge and prudent investments. His love of his wife was reflected by his ability to make careful decisions and to foster loyalty and trust. His love for his children was offered in the most precious commodity we have to give, time. Preceded in death by his son, John Allen Heathington, Jr. (Jay), and wife, Dorothy, John is survived by (SURVIVORS OMITTED).
It was his wish for his ashes to be blended with those of his wife and distributed at the steps of the institution where his love of knowledge, and honor for the writings of Shakespeare took flower, his beloved College of Charleston. "Make use of time, let not advantage slip; Beauty within itself should not be wasted." - Shakespeare. His Memorial gathering was celebrated on the occasion of his 100th birthday this past Labor Day, when he was there to greet many friends who came to pay their respects and to hold his hand in tribute to a life truly, richly lived. Any memorials in his name may be sent to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, or to the charity of your choice. You have brought enlightenment, kindness and beauty to our family; your accomplishments are an inspiration. "I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart); I am never without it (anywhere I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing....)" - e.e. cummings.
