JOHN AND MARTHA (THOM) LOCKETT:
1840: In the 1840 census, the Michael Shiverdecker family and a John Lockett family both appear in the Kanawha County, VA census. Both families were in the western district; both records were entered by Stephen Chitton. John was on page 36; Michael was on page 37. Several girls live with the John Lockett family: two girls are under 5, one girl is 5 & under 10, and one girl is 10 & under 15. It is possible Julia Ann Lockett was one of those Lockett girls. In the 1840 census, John had four children.
No young male was counted in the census, but according to both the 1900 census and his death certificate, John W. Lockett was not born until October of 1840 and the 1840 census was taken in June.
1850: In the 1850 census for Putnam County, Virginia, John W. (William) Lockett was the son of a blacksmith, John O. (Owen) Lockett. John Owen, 51, was born in about 1799 and his wife, Lucretia, 53, was born in about 1797. In 1850, only two children were found with them on the census--Nancy, 15, and John W., 9. The ages of John O. Lockett and Lucretia fall into the right age categories to match the ages of the Lockett couple in the 1840 Kanawha County census. Maybe, these families moved from Kanawha to Putnam County at about the same time.
Note: I have found death certificates for John William Lockett (whom I believe to be Julia Ann Lockett Shiverdecker's brother--not her father) and for John W.'s wife, Martha Thom Lockett (born in Jackson County, Illinois). John W. Lockett's death certificate was the source that listed John W.'s middle name as William and his father's middle name as Owen.
I am sure this is the right John W. Lockett. He always listed Virginia as the place of birth for his mother, his father, and himself. When John died, though, his wife Martha, entered John W.'s father's place of birth as Kentucky on the death certificate (rather than Virginia as stated in censuses) and gave John's mother's name as LURISHA Withrow of West Virginia (rather than Lucretia as stated in the 1850 census).
1860: By 1860, John LOCKET lived in Missouri with Julia Ann and Christopher Columbus Shiverdecker in Bollinger County. John Locket fought in the Civil War with Company C., 8th Prov. Reg't Enrolled MO militia, detailed and organized on May 5, 1863 by Col. Robert M. Brewer of Perry County, Missouri. John, a private, was ordered into active service on April 23, 1863 in Perry County, Missouri. He was relieved from duty November 8, 1863 by General Schofield according to Missouri records (and on November 13, 1863 according to the 1890 surviving soldiers record).
1890: Someone forgot to cross their t's and a John LOCKELL of Coldwater, Missouri, was found on 1890's surviving soldiers special schedule in Cowan Township, Wayne County, Missouri. According to this record, John had the rank of corporal and his company was C, 8th Regmt, Infantry.
1900: Mary Francis Shiverdecker Porter Douglas's daughter, Mary Francis Porter lived with John and Martha Lockett in Cowan Township, Wayne County, MIssouri; (Mary F. and her brother were listed as a niece and a nephew in that census).
1910: John W. Lockett and his wife, Martha lived in Ripley County, Missouri by 1910. Martha had a brother, John B. Thom, who lived in Ripley County, also; that may be why the couple moved to Ripley County. John Lockett died on March 9, 1911 and his occupation was recorded as Union Soldier on his death certificate. Martha died in July of 1929. They were both buried in Gatewood, Ripley County, Missouri.
