TONEY-GILLISPIE/ UNIDENTIFIED/ Individual photo/ Tintype #2 was probably taken in WV in the 1890’s and came from the Toney Collection by Mary Jane Vandale Wood. This tintype was originally in a photo album owned by Mary Jane Gillispie Toney (1851-1907). We would appreciate any help identifying this individual. The family names most associated with this picture are Toney and Gillispie. Specific names associated with this picture are John Edward Toney (1851-1932) and Mary Jane Gillispie Toney (1851-1907) of the Poindexter Toney II (b. 1818) and Elizabeth Jarrett Toney (b. 1824) line. Tintype is of a man who is holding a violin and bow and who is standing beside a bicycle. Dating of this picture was done by Donna Forney Clark and David R. Clark, M.D.
Jeanne Gillispie says she can not be positive that this is Robert Peal Gillispie (1857-1956), a brother of Mary Jane Gillipie Toney, whose album contained the tintype. However, Jeanne states that Robert Peal Gillispie played the violin, as did the man in the tintype. |
