      William S. Haggard, former lieutenant governor, Soldiers Home commandant, editor, lawyer and soldier, died. The State soon named Daniel B. Kehler, the adjutant, as commandant.

      HAGGARD, WILLIAM SELKIRK: 1847-1911
      A native of Jeffersonville, Ohio, William Selkirk Haggard was born on Sept. 18, 1847. In 1857 he moved with his family to Tippecanoe County, Ind. After serving in the Civil War he attended Battleground Collegiate Institute and Asbury (DePauw) University, and studied law. In

      1873 he married Josephine Lutz and they had two sons, Jesse and Fred. In 1871 Haggard began practicing law and in 1875 was elected city judge of Lafayette. He served in the Indiana general assembly and was elected lieutenant-governor. He was editor, Lafayette SATURDAY HERALD and commandant, Indiana State Soldiers' Home. He died in Lafayette on July 7, 1911.
